1965 26' Owens Flagship restoration underway.

Update time again. Ok the engine is coming out. That's a lot of water in there. Yuk! I had that compression leak from cylinder #3. The head bolts near the valley in the vicinity weren't very tight. A number of others weren't very tight either. The head gasket looked perfect though. Not a marine...

    Raw water cooling question

Thank you so much for taking the time to draw this out. I like it. But here you say That's the port manifold. Hehe! Confusing aint it! Anyway I like it. I'm just wondering about a couple things. I'm concerned that you have the water going in one upper fitting and out both lower fittings and the...

    Raw water cooling question

Thanks AllDodge! Here is a shot a little further forward. It shows the hoses coming out of the exhaust manifolds and the hoses coming out of the front of the intake and going to the risers. And the original Owens Flagships block off plate where the thermostat would ordinarily be. The manifolds...

    Raw water cooling question

Greetings all. I'm in the process of restoring a 1965 Owens with a SBC inboard. I'm pulling the engine apart for some mechanical work. Head gaskets and a camshaft & lifters at the least. This engine is raw water cooled and it runs very cold. I have never seen it get above about 120 degrees F...

No it's around the other side of Hayden island. About 4 miles or so by boat. Had a buddy meet me at the boat yard so that we could do the vehicle shuffle. And so he could crew for me. Cheers..........................Todd

Update time again, Got the boat back from the boat yard. Bottom paint looks great. They used Pettit Trinidad Pro. Seems like a good choice. Lousy pictures but you get the idea. They wanted $350.00 to $450 to remove the transducer. I would have loved to have had them do it and be done with it...

1965 26' Owens Flagship restoration underway.

Update time again. Well it's finally "on the hard"! The boat yard got it hauled up and blocked this morning. I had to sign a "wooden boat waver" of course. The project manager Joe Wright took some pictures and emailed them to me this morning since I wasn't able to be there. Above and beyond! I...

And now for something completely different!

I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't gotten that far yet. My plan still is to patch up the gel coat underneath where it's worn through. And then use the tractor paint and hardener that Woodonglass shows in his signature line. The boat is actually at my sons house. He is currently restoring...

They got power to the boat house restored. Nice! It's dark as the hubs of hell in there in the mornings. For our otter problem I suppose I could try leaving the lights on in the boat house all night. I know we haven't had a raccoon in our basement since I started leaving the lights on down...

Well, I'm way overdue for an update.Thread probably slipped to the 20th page or more this time.:embarassed: Haven't done a whole lot with the boat through the winter.Too dang cold! They got the boat house chained back up and moved it tighter against the dock on the left looking out. Now just...

Thanks Mike! Definitely going to consider that. We took the boat out for a shake-down cruise yesterday morning. It went really well. The boat ran great the whole day, it didn't sink, and I didn't run into anything! A big win! I won't lie. I was pretty nervous before we set out. As I said I...

Hmmmmm! I like that idea! I wonder how it would work out. Like how could I clamp them while the epoxy cures? Would I be able to keep it sealed with out a boat load of maintenance? Also the deck does flex a little bit up there when you step on it. It's only like 3/8ths plywood. Plus there is a...

Update time again. I feel good about this one. Two big hurdles checked off the list. Almost ready for the shakedown cruise and a trip to the the boat yard and travel lift. My son & I got the patch on the hull. Found that the edge of the chine on the outside was higher than on the inside. Didn't...

1965 26' Owens Flagship restoration underway.

Time for an update. I finally got the aft bilge pump and switch mounted and wired in with a dedicated ground wire. Plus an indicator light that comes on both with the manual switch and the auto switch. Nice to have that finally checked off the list and the 110v sump pump out of there. I also...

Let's see, what else. I got the distributor dialed in. The spacers for the distributor cap hold-down screws were missing. Couldn't find them for sale anywhere so I had to improvise. The rest was pretty straight forward. I found the part number for the raw water pump impeller. It's readily...

Thanks guys! Yeah the boat house is certainly nice to work on the boat in. But the rent does put a sizable dent in the restoration budget every month. Ok, well I got the patch pieces made to patch the rotten spot temporarily. I decided to use 1/4" plywood on the inside as well as outside...

I got a new starter. Arco marine p/n 50137 With starter solenoid ST-51 from Napa/Echlin. The original one was Prestolite p/n MDU-7032. The bendix in the old one would let go too easily some times. Also when warm it would sometimes just go clunk and not crank. Just one time then would start fine...

I've gotten the carburetor dialed in. Found an electric choke conversion kit to replace the home made choke stove that didn't really work at all. Got it wired in and it works great. Cleaned up a bunch of old orphaned wiring and removed the inoperative Hobbs meter that was just hanging there by...

Update; Got the alternator fixed. It was the rear bearing. Had to get a new rotor, bearing and slip ring assembly and a new front bearing from Crowley Marine to rebuild this one. The brushes were nearly new still. Lots of outfits showed a one wire replacement for the Prestolite ALK 6222Y. Namely...
