    58 Evinrude 7.5 tiller adjustment

Thanks for the reply! Tilting it up is not a problem nor is turning the twist grip. Hope I'm describing it right but it's like if you let your hand off the twist grip instead of staying fairly on course it would just flip around. Hope this description helps. Most motors have something on the...

    58 Evinrude 7.5 tiller adjustment

The tiller of my 58 Evinrude 7.5 is too easy to turn. I'm afraid if I leave my had off the tiller the motor will just 'flip' where it wants (very flexible). Most motors I've dealt with have a screw that you can tighten/loosen to adjust the movement. I can't find anything on this motor for an...

1970 4 hp Evinrude stops suddenly

Correction: Not an OMC but a Sierra (which I think are decently rated)

No: A real OMC. I used one of the chine ones once and never again.

Gas hose size 4 hp 1972 Evinrude

Could not find rubber 1/8 at the few local and independent auto parts stores. I settled for 3/16th which is 1/16 above the 1/8 inch. It still has a snug fit and with the clamps it doesn't leak. So far so good.

1970 4 hp Evinrude stops suddenly

Thanks to everyone for their replies and suggestions! Solved some of the problem but not all. Did a new head gasket, compression test (70 both cylinders). Discovered both ends of the hose from the fuel pump to the carb were leaking. Probably why it shuts down suddenly; after the initial bulb...

Gas hose size 4 hp 1972 Evinrude

Went to replace the gas line from the fuel pump to the carburetor on my 1972 Evinrude 4 hp. Local auto parts could not match it up; either too big or too small. Seems to be an oddball size. None of the parts diagrams list the hose size. Anyone know what size it is. I'd go to a lawnmower...

1970 4 hp Evinrude stops suddenly

Yes I am running it in a barrel. Now I'm going to run it on a lake before I do anything else. Thanks for the heads-up. Do you think running it without the prop and at a medium or low speed (would not run it high w/out the prop) in the barrel would give me an indication if I'm okay or not...

1970 4 hp Evinrude stops suddenly

Replaced the head gasket. Water chambers were very clean. Did a compression test after. 70 exactly on both cylinders. Ran the motor and the exhaust/spray coming out the leg holes was comfortable to the hand. However, the head still 'sizzles' water and the motor started to stall. It was due...

    Sears/Elgin coil question

Update: I picked up a new old stock original coil for (at a reasonable price) the motor. I got lucky and the spark is back. Apparently the coil was the problem; an easy fix.

1970 4 hp Evinrude stops suddenly

Since the head appears to be too hot I thought I'd open it up and make sure the water chambers are not clogged and replace the head gasket. I went to loosen the head bolts and found they were far from being torqued down. In fact they were not much more than finger tight (blown head gasket? as...

1970 4 hp Evinrude stops suddenly

Picked up a 1970 4 hp. The motor runs great and then after a few minutes it just dies out suddenly. The exhaust/water mix on the leg seemed a bit hot (on the hand) so I replaced the impeller (which was shot). The pump body appears to be passable. Started it back up and now the leg...

70 Evinrude 4 HP recoil cord

So you can open it up and replace cord without having to monkey with the spring? That would save a big headache. What are the chances (and how gingerly do you have to be) of the spring popping? I've played with springs on top mounted recoils and they are not nice.

70 Evinrude 4 HP recoil cord

Thanks Racer and Crosby for the replies and the information. Saved me ordering the wrong diameter cord (most listings are for 7/32). One question: Doesn't the cord have to be knotted/attached to the pully at the end so it doesn't come off? thanks again to both!

    Sears/Elgin coil question

I did 'dress' the points and re-set them. Haven't been able to test the coil since my ohm meter crapped out. I have to pick up a new one. I did take a shot at the Tecumseh coil for about 15 bucks. Fits on the field and the attached ignition wire fits BUT the two wires coming out of the...

70 Evinrude 4 HP recoil cord

Just picked up a nice running 1970 Evinrude 4 HP for fifty bucks and as fate would have it the recoil cord snapped. The cord is not listed in parts sites and I've seen listings on ebay for lengths of cord but not specifically for the 4 hp. Anyone know where I can get a cord and the cord...

    Sears/Elgin coil question

I have a 1962 Sears/Elgin air cooled outboard. Used to run great but it sat for a few years and no longer has spark. Would like to replace the coil but they're expensive and old stock (which may also be dead). I've noticed that you can buy a Tecumseh coils (various) with the attached ignition...

    Evinrude 18 powerhead swap

I have a chance to pickup a 61 Johnson with a seized powerhead for about $50. I have two 1955/56 Evinrude 15 powerheads. Since these were the forerunners of the 18 I was wondering if I should pick up the motor and do a powerhead swap. Any ideas as to why it will or will not work? thanks
