    Driveshaft/pinion gear removal issues

Just to close this out, the pinion is possibly corroded onto the driveshaft, leaving it permanently stuck. May have never been removed since 1968 when it was built. I had to find a used lower housing and the gear and bearing components that were stuck behind the pinion. Found everything I needed...

    Driveshaft/pinion gear removal issues

The water pump is removed and the clip over the bearing is removed. Upper bearing spins loose. Does not use a locking cover. Pinion gear won’t drop far enough to slip anything behind, and there isn’t enough room in the gear case for the shaft to be pulled from the bottom after cutting. Still...

    Driveshaft/pinion gear removal issues

Still no luck. Broke 2 boards trying to knock it off from above, and tried using a large chisel. Will not budge. Even used a propane torch on the pinion gear for 2-3 minutes at a time. I can’t find anything online about stuck pinions this bad. May have corroded some due to a recent lower water...

    Driveshaft/pinion gear removal issues

I have been letting it soak overnight with pb blaster as I just hung it in the vise yesterday. I did try that before, but that was on my stand sitting on the floor. Hoping the added weight of the lower unit strapped to the wooden stand will help.

    Driveshaft/pinion gear removal issues

Swapping my 68 merc 650 to short shaft and am currently having an issue getting the pinion gear off the driveshaft so I can swap the shaft and replace the bearings. Nut is already removed. I have tried applying heat, wedging under the driveshaft to pop it up, and is currently hanging by the...

    Gearcase options for my outboard

Kinda what I was finding. Oh well. Be cheaper doing my custom riser. Thank you.

    Gearcase options for my outboard

I would have to tame it way down which isn’t an issue. Was looking into one simply for the fact it sits higher rather than going through making a custom riser for the outboard. It’s a 15’ trihull I converted. Mainly just curious what is out there.

Want to install tach but have an unusual outboard setup

It sends out a standard 4 pulse per rotation signal. Actually designed for cars, but worked out perfect for my needs. You do need to hook it up to the main ignition wire, not the cylinder 1 wire.

    Gearcase options for my outboard

1968 merc 650 inline 4. Curious if they made a racing Gearcase or if they have anything better then what came with it. Mine is fine as I just recently rebuilt it, but was wondering if there were other options to look into. Serial # 2451682

Want to install tach but have an unusual outboard setup

I know, right?! This thing actually came from China too. Where all the obscure custom items come from. 😂 Even did a custom cruise control on my hotfoot throttle, which of course the parts I needed came from China as well. Wanted to rid myself of the standard controls so I made use of 2 hands on...

Want to install tach but have an unusual outboard setup

So I wanted to provide an update. I did find something I could use to send a tach signal. It is a controller that picks up the tach signal through an induction wire, then sends it at as a 3 wire rig going up to the tach. Now have access to my tach up at the dash. Just wanted to update for anyone...

Want to install tach but have an unusual outboard setup

This is the coil. Pic 2 has the black wire on top and the white wire on bottom. Later versions had green instead of black, and black instead of white. I’m assuming my white wire is the negative. Does this coil work the same way as the 2 wire distributor coils on older cars or is the signaling...

Want to install tach but have an unusual outboard setup

Yes thought about that after posting that part. Is it possible to hook up to the negative on the coil and I can find the setting later that would work for the tach. I have been trying to find some kinda specs on the original coil but have had no luck.

Want to install tach but have an unusual outboard setup

Looking back i guess the pole selector will be decided later depending on the setup.

Want to install tach but have an unusual outboard setup

Is it possible to hook up to one of the coil wires? It is hooked up to the coil on some car/inboard setups. Could I do the same here? Sorry I have this posted on another board as well and wanted to make sure all my questions got transferred.

Want to install tach but have an unusual outboard setup

I have the right selection on the tach for the 12 pole, just not sure where to hook up. The salmon wire on the engine side hooks up to the blue distributor wire along with the engine’s mercury switch. Not sure what the distributor wires are supposed to be for as far as what does what.

Want to install tach but have an unusual outboard setup

I want to hook up a tach to my 1968 Mercury 650S. The brown tach signal wire doesn’t seem to bring anything up, and my outboard doesn’t have a stator or a rectifier. It was in that transition year that they had the kind of self running setup with or without a battery. I don’t know where the...
