    Play in steering

I've got some play in my steering I'd like to get out. The outdrive will move side to side a few inches. I do not believe it's the gimbal ring or steering arm. The gimbal ring is tight on all four "corners" and I do not see any play between the steering lever and the swivel shaft or gimbal ring...

140 vs 160 degree thermostat in open loop fresh water cooled engine.

I'm pretty sure my boat has a 140 degree thermostat. Would there be any problem with putting a 160 on it? I know that's bad in salt water, but what about fresh water? It seems running the engine at 160 would be a lot better than 140, but I doubt using a 180 would be safe for the engine...

Rewiring trailer, should I had Aux 12 V+ to charge boat batteries?

I'm charging the plug on the vehicle and trailer to the 7 pin blade. Since it includes 12V+ Aux, should I go ahead and use that to help charge the boat batteries while towing? The trip to and from the lake is 45 mins. I have two deep cell Group 24 batteries in the boat.

Merc 898 WOT RPM range: 3,800 - 4,200 rpm. Why?

I'm wondering why the 305 is limited to this range while the 350 of the same era is limited to 4400-4800 RPM. Is it the camshaft profile? Is the engine not capable of higher RPMs? Is it the outdrive? Will I leave the power range for the engine if I go above 4200 RPM? Edit: P.S. I just...

A few questions about Land & Sea Torque Shift

I just received a newer (1/2 inch pins) 26? Torqueshift prop and disassembled it for inspection and cleaning. I was wondering what the best way to set the pitch screws back to the initial setting is. I have no clue what the maximum in or out setting on the screws are supposed to be. Also, is...

    Need new brake shoes.

How do I find out what kind of brake shoes I need for my trailer?... and where to get them from. I pulled the drum off to re drease the bearings and found the front shoe had delaminated. It's a 78 EZLoader with surge brakes and drums only on the front.

    "sticky" trim gauge

The trim gauge seems to be "sticking" at the bottom of movement. It works fine once it start moving but if it hits the bottom (like when turned off) if stays there until it gets enough force to move to full up. Is it possible to take apart and clean the inside of them without ruining? It'd be...

Installing SE106 in place of MC-1

I'm planning on getting a new SE106 to replace my damaged MC-1 soon. I had a few questions about it. Is there a mercruiser manual that best works with the SE106? When installing a new outdrive do I need to readjust the shift cable? Is there a break in period for a new drive? What is the...

AAA type service that will also tow the boat home?

Can anyone recommend a service that will tow my truck and boat home if I suffer a breakdown?

    Quote to replace shift cable.

I called a local marine place asking for a part and was curious what they charged to replace a shift cable on an MC-1. I was quoted 4-5 hours of labor + parts with a 3 week lead time. 4-5 hours seems rather high. How long does it really take for a shop to do the job? I would have guessed a pro...

Swivel Shaft Grease Fitting on gimbal housing seems to lead to a black hole.

I've pumped 20 pumps into the grease zerk at the top and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Any ideas? If I had to guess, I'd guess there's a whole buncha grease in an empty cavity up there and that there's too much old grease to let the new grease come out the bottom. Swivel Shaft Grease...

Choke 12V+ to Ignition Coil 12V+

Is there any problem with running a jumper from the 12V+ on the electric choke to the 12V+ terminal on the coil? My new coil and ignition don't need the resistor wire and this is the easiest method to deliver 12V+ to the pair. It's what I'd do on a car, but I don't know if there's anything wrong...

Trim Sender through transom shield bolts.

Getting the bolts off was easy since the wires fell apart and I had access to the top bolt. Now that I've tried to put them back on I've run into trouble. The bottom bolt was easy to access and I've torqued it to 100 inch-lbs, but there's no way I can get to the top bolt. I've turned the top...

Corrosion/pitting on bell housing bellows surface and shift cable threads.

I'm getting ready to button things up and install the new shift cable and bellows. While cleaning the bell housing thoroughly I found two problems. Bellows Surface: This is the bottom of the bell housing bellows "seat" where the water was sitting. Is this going to pose a problem? Should I try...

31 degrees tonight. Should I put antifreeze in the block?

It'll be 31 degrees at dawn. I'll be running the engine tomorrow and re-winterizing it after I'm done. What should I do about tonight though? 100W light bulb under the doghouse? Dipstick heater? Don't worry about it? Just use another bottle of antifreeze? The boat's stored outside.

    Trim Sender / Limit Wires

I've learned many times over the years never to make "common sense" assumptions on 30+ year old equipment/electronics. I'm currently installing a new trim sender and limit switch. When trying to trace the wires all four of them literally fell apart in my hands as I touched them. I can't believe...

What kind of hull design would you call this?

I would guess it's a variable deadrise. I've been told this boat handle very well in rough water but doesn't roll when trolling drifting or anchored.

    General Mercruiser Steering Questions.

I have a few questions about the steering system. I have an MC-1. 1. Can the alpha units be turned stop to stop with the engine off without causing any problems/leaks/spills with the power steering system? 2. Can the Mercruiser be turned stop to stop with the engine fully up (trailer towing...

1969 Sea King 20 for use as kicker

I have the chance to pick up a good running 1969 Sea King 20 HP motor for under $300. My plan is to use it as a kicker/trolling motor/emergency motor on my 20' cuddy cabin. My bracket will support up to 25 HP and it's lighter than the 10 HP 4 strokes I was looking at... not to mention it's 1/10...

Alignment tool 91-805475A1 won't go into engine coupler.

This tool has the new dimensions, but it won't go into the coupler. The gimbal bearing is not currently in. I was test fitting the tool before moving to that step (thankfully). I've read the coupler splines may have old grease or burs that can prevent the tool from entering. Is there a good way...
