5.7 Vortec Mercruiser , water ingestion.

I don't know if it was totally solved 100% but the Vortec engines both V6 and V8 had problems with intake gaskets leaking coolant into the cam valley and right into the oil. Sometimes you'll find pitting on the water inlet ports, that can cause leaks, but the sealing surfaces of the manifold...

    1999 4.3L...

It can happen with temperature swings and humidity. The only way to tell for sure it to run it on the water up on plane for a while & recheck. In the spring & fall at times I’ll find the engine covered in condensation. The same thing happens under the valve covers.

    1999 4.3L...

The condensation can definitely happen depending on weather conditions like humidity and temperature, and idling it on the water hose doesn't build enough heat to boil out the moisture. Barr Marine makes an aftermarket conversion kit for those batwings, IIRC. The problem with not changing them...

Engine backfiring through throttle body when trying to accelerate

Thinking back, a back fire through the carb was my prelude to the blown head gaskets I had about 10 years ago. I remember the first start up of '16 it did that, and I though that was odd, but then it didn't do it again. The boat ran fine from June to August and when we got back from vacation (it...

    Bayliner contessa wont plane

Are you sure the outdrive is staying all the way down when you’re trying to get the boat to plane.

Engine backfiring through throttle body when trying to accelerate

Might be a vacuum leak with the surging idle and low vacuum test results; should be higher than 12” of mercury.

    SX-A Gear Oil Question

Not sure how the LS additive (friction modifier) would work with the cone clutch. Might not be the right thing for it, probably wouldn't matter with a dog clutch.

    Exhaust manifold/risers/elbow question

True and if you want a full system including the manifolds, you have to make sure that the impeller in the outdrive or on the engine flows enough water volume to deal with the extra heat load of the manifolds.

    Exhaust manifold/risers/elbow question

They do and can be set up either way. there was a guy on this forum who adapted those to a V6 Cobra like mine and if they actually fit and worked well I might try them the next time I have to change manifolds/elbows which will be about 2 seasons from now. I've been using the OMC/Volvo 2 piece...

How do I safely remove anti-siphon and intake line?

Good work trying to leave no stone unturned. I’d get an outboard tank and run it with fresh gas if it runs good that will tell you if it’s the fuel in your main tank. Don’t know anything about the cool fuel module so can’t say it it’s also involved….

    Exhaust manifold/risers/elbow question

I'd start by removing the rubber exhaust hoses (this can be quite the battle, sometimes harder than getting the bolts out lol) what you are looking for it this: I'd think that given the difference in the Merc water flow for the dry joint vs the wet joint there might be a greater chance you can...

View of unloaded trailer with pickups

If all you want/need is a way of being guided to the hitch, there are very easy add ons, like the eyeball camera I bought some years back...I'm sure they have better ones now. Simple plug in with a magnetic base camera.

    Exhaust manifold/risers/elbow question

I would figure on using a thread chaser, solvent and compressed air to make sure the bolt holes are clean, or else you might not get adequate clamping force on the gasket. Merc's dry joint is a lot better about keeping water out of the exhaust than the older style wet joint though.

    Mercruiser 3.0L choke adjustment

There’s often a vacuum operated linkage that pulls the choke open a fraction of an inch (choke pull off) if the vacuum hose or the diaphragm leaks the choke won’t open a fraction of an inch like it should. Also a lot of people are unaware that on most engines (not sure about Merc TKS) with carbs...

Started out as a good day on the water. 4.3 mercruiser

this is what I hear all the time in the Jeep world, aftermarket sensors, etc the only ones with decent reliability seem to be NTK, (crank sensors and O2 sensors) perhaps Standard Motor Products.....
