I did the simple and universal thing. I decided to just buy a lithium cranking battery. I have 3 motor I rotate, so investing quite a bit of money (relative to cost of motor) in one motor didn't make the most sense to me.

I have a 1977 Johnson 35 HP outboard with Electric start that runs great. Pushes my boat really well and has been a joy to use. I have restored my boat this fall, and its time to get a new cranking battery. I am considering 3 battery types. I'm having trouble deciding on best option.

Tongue weight is good no matter where I move boat within a few inches. I will move it back up on trailer.

u-1 battery will turn thing over plenty easy. I’d use the one from my mower or car to do compression test before spending cash on a battery for a motor I can’t use. My lawn mower is 26 hp. Fires right up easy with u-1. My outboards are 15/25/35 hp all will start with a u-1 battery.
I’m going to cut bunks down. I was able to assess to tongue weight and I’m already well within that 10%-15% range. Plan to cut bunks down in next few days. I made them longer as a temporary repair until I got the 2’ tongue extension welded on.
