Johnson 1988 vro 225 hp fixing up a Frankenstein

the factory manual walks you right through the proper procedure, in the correct order. the key when checking ignition and its not the stop circuit is to follow the manual steps IN ORDER. its tempting to skip steps, but doing that makes it more confusing. for these simple tests (whole ignition...

Johnson 1988 vro 225 hp fixing up a Frankenstein

right. because as Racer said, the key does squat but locate the timing magnets for proper alignment. on this V6 looper, its really just the inner timer base/trigger magnet thats critical.

these are up around 150psi when I do rebuilds. every. time. 98psi is a bit odd. might be your gauge, or the piston skirts are shot.

    1977 55 HP Evinrude

a common issue would also be the small "idle pickup" tube in the middle of the emulsion tube that carries fuel to the upper idle chamber. its like a tiny straw (works at low vacuum) vs a larger one (only works at higher vacuum because of the larger diameter). this tube must be clean. another...

    18 hp Johnson no spark

but unless they are completely open/shorted, they should still allow it to spark? the ATOM ignition modules or the cheap Chinese copies pared with aftermarket coils solves this issue, starts much better, idles like a sewing machine, and never needs adjusting.

    Johnson 1987 pistons

if you cannot feel a "lip" at all were the rings stop at TDC, it shouldnt be worn more than .0015'' in my experience and thats max. I NEVER just quick ball hone and new rings on a motor though. not that it cant be done to get a few hundred hours out of the motor and you dont mind some power loss...

Johnson 1988 vro 225 hp fixing up a Frankenstein

did that genius really put the flywheel that slipped back on without lapping them together? i think this is the same guy that put a V6 looper together without the taper pin because he "couldn't find it".

1989 Evinrude 88 SPL (E88MSLCER) Exhaust Housing Leaking???

yes some guys used a 1/8'' drill bit to ream the hole. if its clogged thats another way it will overheat. the old t stat housing have a tiny hole made larger in later years (or did they add a 2nd hole i forgot).

johnson 115 no spark on right side of motor

sounds like a pack issue. DVA with load adapter will tell the story, ditto for terminal extenders . if sensor had spark follow to the other bank, its not the sensor.

Johnson 150 Starts Out of Water but Not In Water

aftermarket starters... always amazing why people will throw away $65 on a new one thinking its a bargain. a few missing flywheel teeth later and realize a OEM $15 brush kit and 20 minutes will have the original starter back to like-new conditions and issues disappear.

Johnson 1988 vro 225 hp fixing up a Frankenstein

unscrew the cam roller set screw and let us know. very possible the throttle plates are still being held open a hair.cam roller needs to have a .010'' gap so its not touching throttle cam at idle, and clear sleeve in tact. those tygon fuel hoses are not stiff enough in my opinion to prevent fuel...

Add telltale pee hole to 1965 Johnson 75 HP

I was simply going by the general test procedure in the manual, no shade was intended jeeze. if you want to break each system down on a motor until it seems impossibly unreliable, you are welcome to do that.
