    It doesn't sound like you have a short, you have an intermittent open. Most likely a loose or corroded connection. Shouldn't be too difficult to find.

    If the boat has two oil tanks confirm both are full and the floats/sender moves freely. Most likely not a temp issue if it alarms as soon as you start the motor.

    Usually hi temp or low on 2 stroke oil. Is your outboard a 2 or 4 stroke? Did the alarm shut off when the motor stared?

    measure the voltage at the starter while cranking the motor. The voltage may be too low to fully engage the solonoid/bendix gear

    make sure you have all of the required safety equipment and a working VHF. Don't worry about saltwater as long as your motor gets flushed with fresh water at the and of your trip.

The deep cycle is built with thicker plates and made to slowly discharged while powering accessories such as lights, pumps, radios and other stuff. The starter battery...

    I can relate, I like to make things out of other peoples junk. Good luck with it and keep us posted. Post a few pictures if you can. Hopefully the hull is worth saving and you have all of the ownership paperwork.

    Yes you can, get a smart charger and keep an eye on the water/acid level to make sure you don't run it dry.

    How many and what type battery does your boat have now? Do you have a battery switch? Do you have room for two batteries?

    Group 24 batteries should work, I'd go for group 27 myself if they fit in your boat. You can never have too much battery capacity. Are you planing on adding any electronics?
