    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

I fear that sometime in the past, the teeth were being gowned using corroded helm switch. Mine switch was corroded. We tested with multimeter and saw major voltage loss threw switch. Just a suggestion before you POSSIBABLY ruin a new ring gear. U may have additional problems that seem to "grow"...

    Water coming into bilge

I agree, but when all else fails, punt, "danger close" or 5200. Then, use a bigger hammer. LOL

    Water coming into bilge

If motor is out, I'd examine for corrosion on transom metal. Older Alphas are easier to find than Bravos. You may consider finding a freshwater used one to replace yours if too much corrosion or you have a hairline crack. I'd try to resurface transom pipe connection and y-pipe surface. I know...

Is my coupler off ? looks like it and drive won't go back in ..

If you have done as others have suggested and your front mount is solid.... You have larger mounts in the rear, considering the complete transom assembly. I fear that you have a sagging assembly. A simple test is to hit inside transom with large rubber hammer or drill 1/4" holes all around it...

both surfaces don't look smooth. They need to be a smooth as possible. Did you forget or dislodge the smaller o rings.

    Water coming into bilge

water over damn now, but after my transom rebuild, including new y pipes connected, I filled my bilge to almost go into gimbal bearing with tape water and checked for leaks. U sure that your y pipe gasket (o ring) didn't slip??????

    Surging / losing rpm

You may have an electrical wire leaking current. Start with muffs on and at night. Be sure to have good fire extinguisher near by. Using rubber gloves, exercise electrical wires and look for leakage. However, I suspect fuel blockage issues. My tanks had inline fuel filters inside the tanks'...

Marine Flywheel compared to an auto flywheel

I had a bad console/helm switch that cause starter to drag and it ate the ring gear. NOT FUN. Something cause ring gear to wear out prematurely.

Mercruiser 4.3 Vortec running hot on one side

and if it is an old saltwater used boat, the block's passage may be corroded and plugged up. If motor was saltwater cooled for 8 years or more, I'd pitch and invest in a new block while gas prices are out of this world. Few of us can afford boating anymore.

Try hitting alignment bar a few times to see if you can center the inner gimbal bearing. Many times they get out of center as you remove heavy OD. Pray you don't have rotten stringer that sagged after you removed shaft.

Welding a gimbal housing yay or nay?

yeah, TIG welding and saltwater contaminated aluminum don't play well together. I wish there was a soaking or spray solution to eliminate the salt..

Welding a gimbal housing yay or nay?

I have TIGed aluminum and SS. The thinner the metal the more warp. I am a do-it-yourselfer and not a professional welder like Rick. I'd go on line and see if you can find a good used one. Old Alphas were easy to find on line, but Bravos not so much.
