Using Neoprene Strips to Cushion Marine Gas Tank

By now, mot of us have read about the issues using foam to seal and cushion marine tanks. Sooner or later it invites corrosion. I have been working on my 1986 Sea Ray Amberjack restoration for almost 4 years. Covid and health issues have cause many delays. I am ready to install gas tanks. SR...

    1999 7.4 (L29) only hitting 3400RPM at WOT

That's A LOT OF BASE TIMING rpms. TB 4 or 5 with Knock control????? Perhaps you disconnected wrong wire for base timing set? Also, check fuel lines and tank tube pickup for clogged filter. Some pick up tubes have screens inside them. Trust me!!!!! You may want to buy a cheap 12 volt fuel pump...

    Exhaust Manifold Replacement

I have had success in sacrificing 3/8" bolts by cutting off bolt heads of two and using them as piolets to control on and off removal of heavy exhaust manifolds. Just use hack saw to add a flat head slot onto stud ends. I replaced several spark plugs before figuring this out.

Trim question on Alpha 1 gen 1

Outdrives (OD) have a gear lube drain and fill opening. Every Alpha that I have owned has had a drain was at the bottom of foot (above skag). For Bravo1s, you have to pull prop to access. Run with muffs on for a minute or two and then open drain and examine for milky-brown fluid. I suspect lower...

Do I have a low oil alarm?

Most MCs have oil pressure senders and oil switches. The switches and Temperature switches are connected to a common alarm, at least mine are. Unfortunately, unless very loud, they are difficult to hear while motor is running. I purchased extra loud ones so that I would be sure to hear them in...

    Power trim failure

Your example is why I never store an IO wet in saltwater. I snatched my Mercathode off the ODs while working on my boats restoration process. I have owned 6 Alphas/Gen## and now Bravos and corrosion is the acheles heal for all MCs IOs. I am surprised OD area is not just as corroded as your...

    Fuel blockage

Can't be but a couple of places. If salt water boat, I'd remove and inspect tank. 72 is old. Some of the fuel pick up tubes have inline filters and they clog up. Trust me!!!!! U will have to pull carpet if tank is under carpet and maybe cut out the deck. Sorry.... It usually is and difficult to...

    2005 4.3 Intermittent Stalling issue

Had an older Alpha that had wiring corrosion. Current went to ground and cut everything off if vibrations were strong enough. If my memory serves me correctly I wiggled wires until I found the bad one.

Mercruiser Bravo 3 Grinding Nose Only When Turning Left

Just curious why noise only when turning one way.... Why not noise both ways?

    Bravo 3 shifting stiff. Cures?

Disconnect "barrels" at shift plate and see if (in gear and running) OD shifts OK. Just a guess.... But, at least you removed part of the system and can test them independently of each other. Have you checked OD fluid for contaminates. Shops make money fixing broken parts.

Trim question on Alpha 1 gen 1

Maybe just rain water and accumulated, at least pray that is the case. Open OD drain and see is water comes out or fluid is milky brown. If so, expect $$$

    Repeated impeller failures, help

Thanks. Original post indicated that he had replaced 3 impellers, then mentioned tube? So where was impeller? There are only 3 places, that I am aware of, that may have an impeller: OD foot, Motor pully or crank pully, but I am no expert. Perhaps he has an Alpha??? Very curious now....

    Repeated impeller failures, help

I didn't know that any Bravos had impellers in the ODs. But, I am getting too old to remember....

    Repeated impeller failures, help

do B3s use the same water pickup and distribution as B1s? I purchased so-called special kits to eliminate "Brovo-itus" during my rebuild. But, mine also had crank water pumps. The above looks (to me ) identical to B1s.
