installing a remote oil filter set up, got a question....

Did some more research to see how Merc packages their remote oil filter kits and the ones I could find, do not appear to add a different bypass valve, or adapter for the V8s Then looked at how Crusader does theirs, the ones with no oil cooler are like Merc's no different bypass valve, however...

It looks to be sitting very different in those 2 pictures; in the first it looks too low in the stern but in the second it looks more level….

Every title is not in seller's name

In a state that titles boats I’m thinking you might not actually legally own it unless titled in your name. If you don’t legally own it; can you legally sell it? In NY boats & outboard motors are titled but smaller boats and trailers are not.

installing a remote oil filter set up, got a question....

Makes sense, but unless you know if your filter has a bypass or not, in the end you still may not have oil going thru the filter. I'm wondering if you can look up oil filter flow specs, would that shed any light on this question? Are they all the same, or are there differences? Does the length...

    Pumping out oil from dipstick

That will work too, but the garden hose adapter allows you to use a larger diameter hose.

installing a remote oil filter set up, got a question....

Some filters have a bypass valve but some don't. Probably the majority of them do. Since the GM small block V8 as always had the oil filter mounting pad with the adapter & the bypass valve staked in it, you could use a filter without a bypass, and it wouldn't cause a problem if the oil filter...

454 vibrating and breaking starter bolts

If it was smooth when you got it back think of what could have changed…could there be an engine miss, cracked distributor cap, high tension lead with too much resistance etc. First I’d go thru it like auto shop 101 tune up…The balancer slipping is possible but not super likely…

    Pumping out oil from dipstick

Actually on OMC/Volvo engines the dipstick tube is attached to the bottom of the pan with a banjo bolt style set up. If you use a garden hose adapter on your oil vacuum pump (female fitting; the dipstick tube had a male fitting) it works much better than the small plastic tube down the dipstick...

454 vibrating and breaking starter bolts

If Merc doesn’t sell it any longer check Summit Racing or Jegs It’s actually a GM part

454 vibrating and breaking starter bolts

The starter bolts can break if they are the wrong length (too long) and the old direct drive starters usually had a brace on the front to stabilize it. The bolts you use must match whatever starter you are using.

In need of parts (and/or part #’s)…

Even a small hole will cause those problems; you probably should replace the gimble bearing & maybe the ujoints. I\Os need a lot of regular maintenance… Impeller every 2-3 years depending on use Bellows on these can last as long as 10 years but some don’t due to storage (keeping the drive up...

Need Help Selecting New Trailer Brake Kit/Actuator

What you could do is add one stainless pair & see how it stops with that; but I’d guess that with a boat that size you’d want to have brakes on both axles. I used to have a 3500 lb axle on my single axle trailer and it was fine for around town towing. I upgraded the axle to a 6,000 lb axle & 12”...

Need Help Selecting New Trailer Brake Kit/Actuator

Do you need salt water corrosion resistance? If so the way to go is full stainless pricey but you pay once. Even though it says Dexter it is really Tie Down because Dexter bought Tie Down as well as several other trailer parts suppliers. Kodiak or Dee Maxx both make full stainless disc brakes...

installing a remote oil filter set up, got a question....

Another data point, online I have found a couple of different OEM Mercruiser remote oil filter kits, none of them appears to come with a different by pass valve. https://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercruiser-sterndrive-parts/43l-mpi-alphabravo/0m300000-thru-0m614999/remote-oil-filter Here's one....

installing a remote oil filter set up, got a question....

I asked MM when I ordered the kit they said they install lots of these on their turn key engines and you don't need to change the bypass. However, you won't know until you install it and run it till the engine warms up and see if the filter gets warm indicating that oil is flowing through it...

installing a remote oil filter set up, got a question....

I called the guys at Canton Racing who made the mount that goes on the engine, they said you can use either as long as you use it properly. BUT, still worried about the bypass issue. The standard one is an 11 lb bypass, I have heard from a few sources (but Michigan Motorz doesn't agree with...

Hello all, I want to install a remote oil filter mount for my 4.3 V6, is it neccessary to replace the filter mount bypass valve?

Adding this for any V6 owners who want to add the filter mount. As you can see in this pic, on the smaller 4.3 mounting pad, there is no added bypass housing. That housing would not fit, it would have been a lot easier if they were the same but they aren't. So the only way you are going to...
