    OMC Cobra Information

PS looking closely, I think this engine has been replaced because by '98 it should have been a Vortec engine with updated cyl heads, but I see the old style 12 bolt intake vs the 8 bolt Vortec one. Not that it matters much, but the Vortec puts out about 25 more HP. As long as it has good...

Elbow and exhaust manifold inspection what do you think?

Yep they look good, just clean up the sealing surfaces, I like to give mine a brush on coat of Rustoleum paint, because it holds up well in the salt air where my boat lives. I took off my 4 year old Barr manifolds to replace the steering actuator behind the engine and they looked great...

Fluid Changes for Winterizing, Do I Need to?

If you really put just a few hrs on it you can remove the drain and see what comes out. If its pure gear oil then its probably fine to keep running it but any sign of moisture its worth the $20 to replace 2 qts of gear lube.

    OMC Cobra Information

well what did they mean by that? I'm just wondering why the original cast iron unit was changed since unless you are in salt water they last nearly indefinitely unless the engine wasn't winterized. There is nothing wrong with an aluminum intake as long as it is a marine unit that has brass...

    Only 4400 rpms on V6 4.3 2005 19P 3blades

I’m wondering if the original drive was replaced at some point with one originally intended for a V8? In this case I’d think you might need a 17 or even 15 pitch prop….

    Only 4400 rpms on V6 4.3 2005 19P 3blades

One benefit of the V6 in boats this size is fuel economy; I have found that with the Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl 90% of the time I’m running on the small primaries which give good low speed response and excellent fuel economy. But you still have the top end benefit of the huge secondaries; and the...

    Only 4400 rpms on V6 4.3 2005 19P 3blades

I have a 15.5x15 on mine (1.62:1 drive ratio) and it will pull 5,000 or a bit more even WOT. While this definitely lowers top speed the more important result is that it reduces the strain in the engine every time it has to pull the boat up on plane. I’m willing to sacrifice top speed for better...

    OMC Cobra Information

That's a Chevrolet 5.0 with a Holley 2bbl carb, nothing out of the ordinary about them, but if you anticipate freezing temps you must manually drain all the water out of the engine and exhaust system. There are two drains on the engine block, one on each side, lower midsection area, and each...

Help find part number of OMC engine

Ok what part(s) do you need, many of them are the same for all years of Cobra production but some are not. OMC identified their products by model # which was for the whole power package (engine transom mount and outdrive) this model # is what you use to buy parts. In addition the drive has a...

Fluid Changes for Winterizing, Do I Need to?

Very interesing here we have the lemon law, they get 4 tries to fix a problem but there is some interpretation, in that the defect must impair function in some way, so things like minor blemishes or squeaks and rattles don't qualify but water leaks that cause rust, operational problems that...

Help plz, 2002 3.0 mercruiser winterizing question

If you filled the exhaust manifold with AF that’s normal there are idle relief openings on the bottom of the transom mount where water exits when the engine is running. Now if it came out the bilge drain plug hole that might just be spillage.

Fluid Changes for Winterizing, Do I Need to?

I don’t think a once a year oil change should stress anyone out; keep in mind older carbed engines run cool and rich therefore fuel dilution of the oil is a real issue and this has also been a problem on modern 4 stroke outboards. Despite up to date fuel and ignition systems they run very cool...

    Antifreeze circulation through engine

Ah just saw your post, if that’s in the hose leading to the manifold from the thermostat housing I’d remove the housing and see what’s going on in there. If the intake looks really rotted right under the thermostat you may need to replace it. There is a water passage at the front of the intake...

    Antifreeze circulation through engine

Is that from the engine block or the exhaust manifold? Either way that’s a LOT of rust flakes….I’ve been boating in salt water close to 20 years with the same boat and engine and never seen that many rust flakes when I winterized it. Salt water use? If from the block I’d remove the thermostat...

    Antifreeze circulation through engine

PS I tried that way the first year I winterized and then thought to check the strength of the AF in the block, drained some into a paper cup and it looked like rusty water, did not seen to have any AF in it....so if you do this method it would be interesting to take a sample from one of the...
