Is the transducer on a bracket that's attached to the transom?
If so, can you remove the transducer without leaving exposed holes?
Then you could mount the transducer in the bilge if it's fiberglass.
Look on the back of the gauge.
If there's a small rubber hose going into it then it's a pitot tube gauge.
The hose attaches to either the motor leg or a fixed pitot tube pickup on the transom.
What motor do you have?

If it came standard with a bilge pump or not a lot of things could be added, discarded or broken in 37 years.
You'll have to look around to be sure.
