if you have good sparks.... if the carbs are clean....., if the fuel is fresh the engine needs to suck that fuel out of the carbs thanks to the crankcase negative pressure ( aka vacum) during the piston up strokes. when piston come down the pressure builds up and expels that fresh...

    Excessive smoking

ETECs solved it by not mixing oil and gas although the early ones like my 2005 did slip in some oil in the fuel line. That was stopped around 2008 . ETEC in and out ports are CLOSED before the fuel is injected and results in a clean burn meeting EPA standards. None of the inbound fuel...

    Excessive smoking

IF the smoke is a new issue running the engine and you were using the same oil for a long time I suspect chasing synthetic oils to cure the problem ...will not resolve the underlying cause of the smoke and smoke is good :)

    1977 55 HP Evinrude

the small float spring is just a helper to pull out the inlet needle in case it is stuck... the needle should....drop on it own under the incoming fuel pressure from the pump. take care of the main issues

    1977 55 HP Evinrude

skip... you are not missing screws...if you think you do.... post a picture to better explain you point....aside from that, consider visiting a shop to help out. orifices are hidden behing cover plugs and you indicated the engine runs on choke "Rebuilt carbs, new fuel pump. Runs on choke"...

new to you motor ?? running in cool cold temps.. ??? excessive smoking can sometimes be traces to the purge valve /passages being blocked and may cause fuel oil puddling in the crankcase.
