    Have you seen any of those driveshafts snapped at the o-ring groove ?

    The 84 and newer did not use the o-ring.

    The solenoid sounds like it is working.----So charge the battery .----Load test the battery.---Check battery cables.----Inspect starter.

    What happens when you push the clip in place???---With the spring as it is without any cutting.-----With the little bump going in that hole.-----I have seen a few with the clip installed wrong over the years.----Always said that a novice forgot how it came apart.

    I have not seen pictures of this 5 HP Gale !---But It is not like the pictures of the 12 HP.----Find You Tube video of this job on a 5-1/2 HP Johnson / Evinrude up to 1965.-----Will show what needs to be done.

    That motor in post #1 is the old proven inline 6 cylinder !----The 2+2 was a 4 cylinder machine.

    What motor is it hooked up to ?----Why do you want to or feel a need to modify this ?---So you do not want the overheat warning horn to work on a bigger motor ?

    Forgot to mention it.----Check the thermostat as I often find them stuck open.---Lately have found some that would not open in boiling water.---Easy to check.

    They are simple motors.----Parts are everywhere.----Do not need $100 + / hr dealer support.

    The stator has 2 sets of windings.----One to charge the battery via the rectifier.----One set feeds the switch box / capacitor to fire sparkplugs.------These motors can be started with a dead battery.----You spin the flywheel with a rope and you get spark.----Just like a lawnmower or chainsaw...

    Friends have one these wonderful motors.----Found the check valves in the fuel pump were hanging up .----Possibly due to age / E10 fuel.----New diaphragm / check valves and like new again.---Cheap easy fix as the small brown bottles did the trick.
