Fuel gauge always says full. Which variable resistor/potentiometer?

you need to get the float arm to properly move also, if your sender is at the back of the tank and you have a shallow tank, it will most likely read full if your bow is always pointed upwards. does your boat sit level?

89 Volvo Penta AQ271C ignition or carb, maybe something else

its a standard timing tape. mostly used on performance engines so you can check timing advance without an advance timing gun so your timing is good now check fuel pressure at the carb

You have timing tape on the damper. It's used to validate full advance the groove is TDC or 0 Timing tab is standard SBC. The big V is TDC At 2800 RPM, your total advance should be 32 or 34 (see decal on vanity cover)

    Problem with a Mercruiser 5.7 V8 LX

So i was gifted a boat..

unless you are emotionally attached to the boat, I would sell the motor off of it and get rid of the rest. tri-hull boats have the worst ride quality ever unless the water is glass smooth. the way boats rot, the transom is the first thing to go, the stringers next, and the floor last. this...

    Does compression determine horsepower???

no yes, compression is directly tied to power output try yamaha ring-free to see if your compression numbers come back up.

    Carpet bunks and salt water

wash the boat often not really a worry yes, this will rub the paint off, just slightly faster than the carpet, especially if there is sand in the water that gets stuck between carpet or UHMW bunk slides are both acceptable. make sure your bunks are plain wood or cypress. do not ever use...

89 Volvo Penta AQ271C ignition or carb, maybe something else

you have to do the diagnostic work to know what is going on. being "all of a sudden" I would lean toward bad fuel or blown power valve or bad compression.

    1988 3.0 and 1994 3.0 swap

the 4.3 will actually use less fuel overall than the 3.0 remember, with 3.0's you want to stick with 1990 and older or 1991 and newer to not mix generations

check the fuel pressure. may be easiest to remove the fuel line and drill a 1/8 NPT port in the Y-block (its a steel block with 3 holes drilled into it and the 3 lines brazed in place) you can also get another bowl inlet plug and plumb the fuel gauge there

89 Volvo Penta AQ271C ignition or carb, maybe something else

147psi is good are your plugs black? if so, you could have a blown power valve (from a backfire) or the fuel tell-tale hose is full of fuel indicating a bad fuel pump can you smell the engine burning rich? what is your timing set to? should be all in at 32 degrees BTDC at about 2800 RPM...
