gotta go with new on the vertical driveshaft. the internal splines wear, then strip and leave you stranded needing a tow. 100% of the vertical driveshafts will fail - its a design flaw. the used one you bought will most likely fail soon as well. look at the splines.
I would pull some poly chord thru to allow you to easily pull what you want in the future.
I have pulled spare wires in the past, howeve most of the time what I thought I would need in the future is not what I actually needed
first, AD has you straighted out on the timing tape and RH vs LH motors.
secondly, post #2 would indicate that you did not shunt the two wires and put the motor in base timing mode.
Welcome aboard.
as GM stated, additional weight on board is the only thing that will cause it to sit lower.
pull the boat and weigh it. compare it to specs. to sit 2-3" lower on a 25' boat would mean you have about 200 gallons of water on board
so prepare for a full gut-n-restoration...
I hope you really really like projects
this pic alone indicates there is something amiss with the transom
those brown streaks are indicators of rot. the bracket looks like its aftermarket, meaning the boat may have been designed and built with an I/O, then converted

you over-paid for the OMC motor/Stringer drive/rotten boat combo
a rotten hull will cost you about $3000, the interior which is most likely shot will cost you about $2000. the OMC drive alone will cost you about $1000 in parts for normal maintenance (ball gears, seals, impeller housing and...

If the...

$1500 is peanuts if you want the ease of pushing a button and done.
myself, if I get a 'toon, I would go with sealegs
for $300, you can get 1-1/2 sand augers (you need at least two sand augers and the best price you will find is $200
if your talking the spun stainless cup holders that rust......
get yourself some citrisurf.
the spinning/graining of the stainless exposes the iron in the stainless. you need to passivate. hence the citrisurf. a few times cleaning them and you remove the free iron.
