    Popping noise when lowering outdrive

I think I have it fixed. Took a 60 grit flap wheel to the gimbal ring and case. Sanded down to remove most/all of the remaining galling, then sanded on the ring until I had about a business card's worth of gap (no more rubbing): I couldn't feel any play in the trim pivots. And since I was...

What is your worst day on the water?

Can't say I can top any of these.... but here's the worst things I've had in my 2.5 years of boating: -Hit the Ohio River with my wife, my best friend, and his buddy (Duffy's Landing, Indiana). Water is way rougher than expected and any time we go above idle it doesn't go well. Finally find...

    Popping noise when lowering outdrive

Did some work on it after work today (at least until the heat got to me :( ) First, the ground clamp damage is on the other side which doesn't rub and has about a 1/8" clearance to the gearcase. Speaking of clerances, that side is flush at the tilt pin joint, while the side rubbing has a small...

    Popping noise when lowering outdrive

I just remembered another thing... One of the two gearcase ears had arc pitting from a ground clamp when a tool shop and I had tried and failed to weld nuts on broken bolts seized in the case (in both cases we had to drill and helicoil). I thought I filed that smooth but it's possible in the...

    Popping noise when lowering outdrive

I'll have to measure and inspect closer. If the one shoe is slightly off, am I good to sand the surfaces to adequate clearance? Getting some serious sticker shock looking at replacement rings... Would be the most expensive repair to date.

    Popping noise when lowering outdrive

Pulled the rams off. Was tight and dry... A couple of year ago I used silicone paste but apparently when I had the drive off last I didn't reapply anything. What's the suggested lube? As for the noise. I think I found it. The upper case is grinding on the gimbal ring: I should have...

    Popping noise when lowering outdrive

    No change after loosening bushings.

    Popping noise when lowering outdrive

Will check. The U joint was somewhat rusty but smooth when I greased it this offseason.

    Popping noise when lowering outdrive

I see. I bottomed out the nuts when I re-installed my outdrive after the last offseason's repairs as I always have. Is that incorrect? The bushings were replaced a few years ago. But more importantly, how serious of an issue is it?

    Popping noise when lowering outdrive

Noticed a weird popping noise when lowering my outdrive (MC-1 888) after I got home from an outing today. See video. Is this normal? If not, what would cause it? I did hit a bit of wood today, once hard enough I thought I nailed the prop (but the prop, despite being plastic, only had...

How to remove pressed prop hubs before recycling

I had always been under the impressing that there was more to it than just a shop press, as ubiquitous as such presses are. Or is that a "if you had to ask, you're not supposed to know" smoke and mirrors show? Perhaps, a "you can but you'll ruin it" situation, which would put me in luck if all I...

How to remove pressed prop hubs before recycling

Here's an atypical prop question: I have four aluminum props sitting around with rubber hubs. One has a spun hub (pressed Mercruiser), one has hub starting to dry rot (Michigan Wheel that appears to be pressed), and two have substantial damage (both are pressed Mercruisers, one has a rotted hub...

    Mercruiser 888 Unexpected Prop behavior?

Which (as shown in this thread), tracked for me as well. One of these days I'll give the 19P 4-bladed solas a try... free is free.

    GPS Speedo

I have. I have an 18 pitch 4 bladed prop that hits middle of WOT range under load, while I have a 19 pitch 3 bladed prop that hits top of WOT range under load. The 19 runs a bit faster. But the 4 blade has more lift and doesn't respond to trimming... and also has a buttload of rake to the point...

    GPS Speedo

Technically, it can be if comparing props of different types (material, blade count, rake, diameter, etc.), although the "is is a correct prop" determination is a factor of WOT RPM and what the engine's spec calls for.

    GPS Speedo

But the relation to ground (GPS) speed may be close enough depending on the activity? Example being pulling a tube/skier on a lake or river... if the current is enough that the error introduced becomes significant, then (at least where I boat and pull such things) it's probably not a good...

    Mercruiser 888 Unexpected Prop behavior?

Here's a video of one of the full throttle tests. In this one I topped out at 46mph. An earlier run (not videoed) hit 47 briefly, but that's splitting hairs. Turning about 4000 RPM.

    GPS Speedo

I GPS'd my gauges when I redid them as part of a larger overhaul (pitot tube setup was destroyed and useless). But while I mostly used Faria gauges like you chose (literally the same models), I went with a "generic" cheapie LCD unit for the Speedometer as that also grants me heading (never use...

(Delete this, I have fat fingers)

    Mercruiser 888 Unexpected Prop behavior?

Results: On the 21 pitch prop, I was able to hit a WOT of 3950-4000RPM, right near the middle of the range. Top speed was 45-47mph in the most favorable wind/current. Fuel economy was good too. Same results as the first time other than the RPM... maybe back then I did hit 3900 or so back then...
