2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies at idle

Iiiiiiiiiiinteresting... As I said earlier, if I pressurize the system with a primer bulb, no obvious leaks. If I then give just a tad of suction to the pulse hose connection at the pump, gas comes out - not a lot, 2-3 cc's at the most. Does it look like a leaky pump? Thanks!

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies at idle

That's what I am wondering about, because it smokes too much even for a two-stroke (smoked A LOT more before carbs redone), lots of smoke on startup, and when you close the throttle, a big puff comes out. Pump checks out OK per manual, but there is always some gas in the pulse hose; that doesn't...

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies at idle

Did it as a part of restoring factory settings - took them out and blew the screw hole (and the orifice) with carb cleaner.

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies at idle

So I assumed wrong. Somebody did mess with idle screws: not only they were off, but all carbs were different. Returned to factory settings, major improvement. We'll see how it behaves on the water. Thanks!

    Yep, next step. Thanks!

#9 in the picture above? Already done. Will tweak idle screws and update later.

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies at idle

Good point, didn't think of that. No, actually. There are 4 metering bodies with bowls/floats/valves/jets, and there are two throttle bodies (one per pair of cylinders) with butterflies; the idle needles screw into the throttle bodies. I've re-done the former. For throttle bodies, I just blew...

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies at idle

    >34 looks like idle needle It is. I am not messing with carb adjustments, though, before eliminating simple things (and for that, I'll probably take it to the shop, since I am still having nightmares from trying to balance 4-carb setups on my old Hondas/Yamahas). >bad pump Possible; I'll get...

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies at idle

    >proper spark/compression? Checked earlier. Spark good, compression borderline, but within acceptable, and consistent across cylinders > idle adjustment screw on carb I did not mess with the adjustments, so I assume (or rather, hope) they are where they need to be. I'd rather try to eliminate...

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies at idle

Alright, after sorting out earlier problems with the project (dying when throttling up - don't ask me how, it just started running OK after unscrewing and blowing out the jets for the nth time), here's another: dies at idle. Starts OK, idles for a few seconds at about 700-800 rpm, then sort of...

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR fffffffffrustration... (still dies off idle)

Fair enough, but I didn't mess with any adjustments. Alright, this may be weird, but when I pop off the float chamber, it feels dry, as if there was no gas in it. There is gas draining from the carb, though. Something to explore, or is my paranoia getting to me?

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR fffffffffrustration... (still dies off idle)

What do you mean by that? What do I look for?

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR fffffffffrustration... (still dies off idle)

It smokes too much even for a two-stroke, backfires occasionally, and there is more raw fuel in exhaust than I am comfortable with - sounds like rich, right? Yet, open the throttle, it sputters and dies, as if it were not enough gas. Why I am getting both of those symptoms at the same time is...

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR fffffffffrustration... (still dies off idle)

The pump seems functional, then. What else I might be overlooking?

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR fffffffffrustration... (still dies off idle)

Pulled the pump. So there are three hoses: gas supply from the engine fuel filter, oil supply for injection (plugged off by the previous owner - running pre-mix), pulse hose to the crankcase, and there is also a fitting to the vapor separator that sends the gas to fuel manifolds on each side of...

No on all three. What do I look for when I tear it down? Thanks!

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR fffffffffrustration... (still dies off idle)

So I am still trying to find out what my problem is: it almost feels like the motor is fuel starved AND runs rich at the same time. Starts fine, but when you give it throttle, sputters and dies. So far: Carbs rebuilt (gaskets, needles and seats) + new bowls (jets moved from old). Hope I did not...

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies off idle

Lousy. When it does not die coming off idle, that is. I cannot really answer the question about the jets (have to go back and see what was in the kit), but I don't think it's the jets or the floats: it was running right, until suddenly it wasn't. Could it be enricher circuit?

2005 115 Johnson PLSOR dies off idle

Have to resurrect the thread, now that I got time to mess with the motor again. So after I seemed to have fixed the float issues (discussed way back when on this forum), the motor was running normal for a while: no smoke, no exhaust drip. And then this problem started, and looks like I got it...
