Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

I just looked up your Ballistic prop. I'm surprised someone would recommend this prop for your application. Looks like the Ballistic uses the same hub system. If it's exactly the same you could look for a Quicksilver brand prop. It's the same as the Black Max but called Black Diamond and doesn't...

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

Yes, I didn't think Merc would help you much but I was hoping they might be willing to help due to you being in the EU. They always ask for a leak down test. If I feel one might needed I will usually do a "dynamic compression test" instead. On these I/O engine I find they are just as informative...

    2-4-C

I should add that if you buy from a good dealer --- you will never get that level of service anywhere else. Out of all the non new boat selling dealers I worked for. Only one delivered top notch service, and we charged for it -- oh did we charge. And truth be told, I think most of that was the...

    2-4-C

I really don't have much of an opinion about saltwater. I've probably only worked on 30-50 salt boats, way less then 1% of the boats I have worked on. I've seen draining Merc gear lube out of a Volvo drive and refilling (sometimes need to do it twice) fix a slipping cone clutch. I've seen...

    2-4-C

Them's fighting words Sir. I joke with the younger techs that this is a hill I'm happy to die on! I have both on my bench. I had always used #3 at home and PS at work until I retired and kept my road box with all the chemicals and lubes. I find Perfect seal to be a little thicker (more solids)...

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

Cam Lobe Lift looks right. But as far as the other measurements --- I have no idea. Mercury doesn't publish any of these numbers. Also I don't know if I would trust that the TDC that you're going off of is correct. The outer ring that's marked with TDC can be off. They can slip a little. The...

    2-4-C

it's gone --- once available stock is sold engine coupler grease - gone u-joint and gimbal bearing grease - gone Special Lube 101 - gone Perfect Seal - gone I feel old I remember when they started adding Teflon to the 2-4-C and caused a big kerfuffle at a lot of dealers. Me and Pepperidge Farm...

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

It sounds like you have checked the drive all you can, suggest you clean the water passages, install new impeller and test run the engine to see if that clears up the low sea water pressure issue. At that point you can WOT the engine and see what happens. Other things you can check, put a long...

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

I was mainly pointing out that you aren't allowing the engine to run at WOT at a steady state long enough to get valid results. Optimal trim of only 5% makes me question how the boat is loaded and/or prop selection.

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

I just mentioned the gear lube because it didn't look like what I'm used to seeing, I can't say if it will cause you issues. It appears to meet Merc specs. I'm pretty sure it isn't causing your current issue. Mercury recommends that customers don't exceed 1500 RPMs on muffs. They want you to...

Alpha 1 gen 2 shift does intensity of ratcheting matter

If you’re sure on the 6”. Adjust the shift cable from the helm to get the ratchet right. Shouldn’t be more than 1/2 way up the slot with a new inner transom cable.

Alpha 1 Gen 2 shift question

Mercury Marine would be soo happy to sell you the Bravo Shift interrupt switch jumper P/N 864337A1 $18.00 It's what I used to run this test.

Alpha 1 gen 2 shift does intensity of ratcheting matter

Yes, a problem. You missed something. But you did real good checking like this. That's how a seasoned tech checks their work. Should ratchet harder when in forward. About twice as much. No clicking in neutral. Good information in Section 1C - Troubleshooting, Shift System, Section 2A - Remote...

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

Looking at the pics. Bearings and gears look pretty good. Yes you should clean the water passages! Here in the US we use toilet bowl cleaner, not sure what you have available in the EU. Might need to use muriatic acid for swimming pools? Hard to tell from pics but the gear lube worries me a bit...

Mercruiser Cool Fuel Module (Gen III) cooling passages routing question

Pretty sure that bolt hole shouldn't be open to the cooling water passage and a dealer would recommend replacing the entire module. If it was my engine, measure the depth of the threads in the hole and add the thickness of the cover, now make sure the bolt you have is that long (you want the...

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

That's where I would go next. I think it's very important to answer this question. Try in neutral and see if you get a Neutral Overspeed fault, this should show a fault on your VV screen and Guardian in Diacom. If you want test without pulling the prop, you can trigger or bypass the in gear...

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

I don't have the time right now to spend the time I need, hopefully tonight or tomorrow. I do have a couple of questions for @tpenfield. Ted, I can't remember but back when you made these REC files for your MerCruisers, weren't you trying to troubleshoot a low voltage alarm? Also I can't find...

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

Yes I have never seen this before. Maybe a EU thing? Engine build date 2016 sold in 2018. I'm not sure about it being a warranty return, just that the engine only was registered by the warranty dept.

Mercruiser 4.5l low vacuum, WOT 4350 and higher fuel consumption

This wasn't the REC file I was hoping for. Here is what I see. Voltage still too low. this might explain the numbers I'm seeing and the many sensor spikes at unusual times. Sea water pressure too low and has some of those spikes. Maybe this affecting the WOT? I'm not sure. Fuel trims very...

Thanks, non of these have been registered with Merc. Drive is listed as 1.62:1 ratio when it left the factory.
