    If you've got a router you could build something like the fixture I used to make scarf joints for my stringers. It let's you router a very shallow angle into a piece of plywood. Just Google or YouTube "scarf joint fixture".

    Polishing or paint

    Nah, I don't think that was my problem. It shines great with the wet sand/buff schedule I did, but I think I should have spent longer time at some of the intermediate wet grits to get the bigger sanding swirls out.
