Mechanic for ‘70 merc 115 near twin cities, MN???

Around here, a lot of the old school guys are set up near a lake....usually in an old run down shop with parts stacked up to the ceiling with greasy floors......and a cig hanging on the lip...and no website.

Mechanic for ‘70 merc 115 near twin cities, MN???

For a 53 year old motor, need to find an old school mechanic......only other option is to get a manual and do it yourself, and use a forum like this to help you. These new "techs"...if they can't plug a laptop in to give them a solution, they won't mess with it......

    Thermostat and pissing issue

Iboats has them on this site....Sierra #18-3556.....in stock. Buying from them helps support this forum. They don't carry a lot of parts for these old motors, but if they have what I need I try to buy from them. (y)

Control rod seal and copper ring for drive shaft and boot

Ebay is good for NLA and NOS parts.....use a site like Crowley marine or marineengine.com to get part numbers....they have parts diagrams and sell some parts too. But the discontinued parts can usually be found on ebay.

How does this pin come out?

How does this pin come out?

This is the pin that secures the shift rod, held on with a cotter pin. Should push out....no need to spin anything. Looks kinda corroded, maybe spray some penetrant on it and work it out......just be careful and not bend the shift rods......

1990 force 50hp driveshaft spline boot and keeper

Have heard some folks don't even bother using the seal and retainer.....will run fine without them. If you have the parts I would use them....they are supposed to be on there. No telling where the copper ring is, may not have been installed by the PO. Might be why the seal was laying there...

1990 force 50hp driveshaft spline boot and keeper

1990 force 50hp driveshaft spline boot and keeper

Don't have any vids or pics.....basically slide the retainer down on the driveshaft with the cupped side up, then slide the seal down onto the retainer where it seats into it. Then install the lower as usual.....tricky part is not hitting the sides and knocking the seal off before it engages...
