    On your type of electrical generation system, rectifier/regulators produce heat as they do their magic. They are shunting current to ground and that produces heat. Particularly air cooled R/R's. Not unknown for them to get so hot they harm adjacent components, with or without flames at times.

    You might be confusing the relay assembly used on the OP's motor with say a Mercury model that uses separate Bosch style relays. Here is a photo of the OP's relay assembly.

    Is the pump motor on the T and T unit getting ~12.6 volts when the relay is activated? Voltage without current flow is meaningless.
