    Could be as simple as blown fuse, a bad connection point or it could that either the rectifier/regulator has failed or the lighting coil has failed. Do you have a multimeter and know how to use it?

    Yes. It will work. But you won't be able to have trim information on the 6Y8 tachometer if you have trim information displayed on a standalone trim gauge or if your present tachometer is a Yamaha 6Y5 type that is displaying trim information.
