Fiberglass itself is not water proof, it will absorb water over time, so a gelcoat is added on top to seal and make the glass mat waterproof. Paint of good quality will probably seal for a short oeriod of time but us not a permanent solution !!! Others may chime in here with more experience in...

Synthetic lubricants are designed to provude more lubrication than dinosour lubes ( petroleum based). They are also far more stable under extreme temperatures. Dino oil gets thin under high heat and gets thick in the cold. Syn lubes dont do that, so they flow more uniformly at temperature...
