Piston soaking a 2 cycle outboard?

True, but it doesn't apply to soaking the pistons to loosen the rings. The rings should not hang up. In your Toyota engine example, of course, you believe your rings hanging up is a defect in engine design. That is a different animal than preventative maintenance. Preventative maintenance...

Has anybody painted their bilge glossy grey with the total boat epoxy?

Gee, grey is a better color for a bilge than glossy white, IMO. It will show less dirt and grease. Usually epoxy paint is two part, and temp has a large effect on how fast it cures. As such, there is a recoat time frame based upon the ambient temp of the applied surface.

Piston soaking a 2 cycle outboard?

Trying to free up the rings on a 2 cycle motor is a standard procedure, when they stick. People soak 'em in all kinds of stuff. It is not usually preventative maintenance, but a last ditch effort.

    Water in lower unit

To add to what Mark said, If you cannot find the leak, rotate the driveshaft and shift shaft with the pressurized gearcase under water. If the driveshaft bearing is worn or the shift shaft bushing is worn, they can leak as they are turned.

    Water in lower unit

Mine leaked twice thru the shift rod seal. The obvious other place is the driveshaft seal in the waterpump base. If you have one of those gearlube pumps, you can use the fitting and plastic tube to test the gearcase for leaks. Drop the gearcase, drain the gear lube, screw in the tube and use...

Switching trailers in my garage with DIY lift

OK, IMO you overkilled this issue. An aluminum boat w/o a motor is a real strong hull. You can drop it on the ground w/o issue. e.g. My friend and his father used to take the motor off of their 16' fiberglass runabout, with a windshield and put it upside down on some sawhorses for the winter...

1986 E70TLCDC Piston Destruction - What Causes This?

It is probably the last chance to teach your kid how to rebuild an engine, as that motor is quite simple and easy to work on. Of course, that implies the kid is interested. Off subject- when my kid was raving about a new video game, I asked him if he would rather play it or design it? I...

    Faria Fuel Gauge Question

Gee, fuel gauges only have three connections. They are ground, +12VDC and the sender. The wire colors are usually black, purple (or purple/red) and pink, respectively. Look at your plug and see what goes where. Alternatively, use an ohmmeter and see that you have some resistance across all of...

1981 Johnson 90 HP overheating, but not all the time

It looks like you have some rust in the bottom cylinder. That implies a head gasket leak. Compression leaking into the water jacket causes overheat. Make sure the cylinder head is flat, the block is flat, install the diverters and new head gaskets and torque to specs.

How do I Remove Very stuck on Exhaust Manifold Gaskets?

Cast iron cylinder head? If so, they are pretty tough, unlike aluminum. There are stamped steel "holders" for single edge razor blades, used for scraping paint. A couple of new blades ought to get it. Be careful on aluminum components, but I do not think you will damage the cast iron...

    Just cant figure this out...

Gee, I think you are chasing the wrong issue. Even lousy fuel lines take years to break down, and then the fuel filter or screen will catch the particles. You can get good fuel line anywhere. There is an SAE rating for rubber/neoprene outboard fuel line. I probably bought my last fuel line...

1986 E70TLCDC Piston Destruction - What Causes This?

Gee, clean and rebuild the carbs, rebuild the waterpump, change the thermostats, bore out the bad cylinder and install a new piston. Say $500 plus 20 hours of your time, vs the cost of a new engine, is something to contemplate.

Johnson 60hp 1970s scrap it or keep it?

Gee, bypass the primer valve, after the motor starts (pinch the fuel line with a vice grip) and see if that helps. A leaking primer would allow raw fuel into the intake manifold. It is good for cold start, but after that it would cause flooding.

Faria Beede Tachometer reading high intermittently

Gee, I never had to "thunk" any of my tachs. They either worked or broke, but hitting them never made any difference. I suspect the OP had corroded wiring. I have to "thunk" my water pressure gauge from time to time. It has brass components, but the saltwater still makes the movement stiff...

    Flooring ok to reseal/EVA foam?

You realize that any exterior plywood is laminated with waterproof glue? It never used to be, but the newer waterproof glues are cheap enough that CDX and other exterior grades come with it. Is marine ply still worth the extra cost? Even Tite bond III is waterproof.

    Water in the tank

Empty the tank out and toss in some alcohol to absorb the residual water, if any. That can also be dumped out. If you are not sure where the water came from, check the fill and vent for leakage from the outside into the tank. Water used to splash into my speedboat fuel tank, when I hit a...

    Aluminum vs stainless props

Aluminum props are routinely used on BBCs with 330HP. They are suitable for most/all motors. Some people think that SS props are more efficient than Al ones. They are definitely more durable. I ran my 18' I/O boat on a shallow creek. The silt and mud would rip up an al prop in short order...
