Here is the page on how your system works. The factory manual does not tell how to test the system without having their analyzer so you have to go by the CDI instructions.

A little info from an old thread on the glaspar/corvair; https://forums.iboats.com/threads/wayne-100-corvair-powered-boat.567299/

This should be yours; I was thinking of the 1976 850 that shut off by grounding the switch box.

It has been a long time since I owned an inline Merc and between my 82 year old memory and eyes I don't think I could find it in a picture. The last manuals I still have only go up to 1977. If you could post the serial number on the motor I might be able to point you to the right info. I just...

Not a good thing to do. Any jumping around on various terminals could cause damage somewhere in the system. Do the step by step tests to find the bad component. This does require a decent multimeter and a DVA adapter to read peak DC voltages. The only simple test is to remove the black with...

No, you will not hear anything from the switchbox. Without being there with a wiring diagram in hand and test meters I am afraid I can't diagnose the problem. Did you read the info on the CDI guide? It should give you the step by step instructions.

Yes, along with at least a dozen other things. As simple as the kill switch if it has one not having the lanyard hooked up to a lot of expensive things. I would suggest you get the factory manual for that motor before you start throwing parts at it. Those older Mercs are know for wiring being...

Compression test and leak down test in order. Aluminum cylinder head so I would suspect a possible head gasket problem.

I repaired a crack about 3" long back in the early '70s with PC-7 on a 120 Mercruiser. Boat stayed in the family for about 8 years. About 20 or so years later I ran into the 4th owner on the lake and it was still going strong. Sometimes you get lucky.

Tried to reply and show the eleven states where the USCG and USPS abbreviations don't match. It didn't come out quite right, just move the state heading one space to the right. Could not figure out to correct it after I posted.

California Colorado Delaware Hawaii Kansas Massachusetts Mississippi Michigan Nebraska Washington Wisconsin USCG CF CL DL HA KA MS MI MC NB WN WS USPS CA CO DE HI KS MA MS MI NE WA WI

You are correct. My fingers were typing faster then my brain.

VINs did not start being issued on boats until 1972. If you have the original Startcraft id on the plate perhaps someone on here can decipher it from the serial number.

Is this a new problem or has it done since you have had the boat? I am thinking the possibility could be the oil level in the oil pan changing due to both de-acceleration and the motor angle changing as you come off plane. I will admit I know nothing about the baffle system in you oil pan...

I know a few of us know how true this is.

Check for pictures on the internet of late 60's to early 70's Chrysler bassboats. Yours looks similar. https://www.harbortownemarine.com/listings/chrysler-14-jon-boat Back in those wild and wooly days of fiberglas boats many companies would buy a particular boat and use it to mold their own...

Probably trim tab adustment.

We discovered that we were both from the same small town in Western Pennsylvania after I posted a picture of a dirt track race car on I-Boats that he recognized. Though he was younger than me we PM'd a few times about some of his cousins I knew well. RIP Don

Always liked the 12 string but never played one except for a few times lately at the local guitar shop. Can't figure out yet how to sneak one into the house. Here is an interesting article I found last night; https://studentofguitar.com/12-string-guitar-players/ A whole evening until O'dark...
