The pin at the top of the driveshaft rotates / drives the seal assembly.

????----On the 5.5 HP there is a hole for a pin / key to drive the impeller !------Not possible to install driveshaft upside down on a 56 model 15 HP.

Looks like it had water in it and froze.------Gear housing needs to be replaced.

That is correct.----A GM inline 6 model.------Many ( not all ) had issues with structure under the floor.----Boat appears to have been looked after.

Not sure why this was mentioned in post #17.----The statement does not make sense to me.

How did this motor run for you last season?

One way for gas to get in the oil is via a defective fuel pump.----Oh --these 4 strokes with all their hidden issues.

Was the motor stored properly?---Laid down in wrong side perhaps ?

Pull lower unit apart.----Some pinion gears use a circlip to position the driveshaft.----Clip might be missing / broken or rusted away.

Post pictures of the damaged / cracked housing.----Only way to get accurate opinions on repairs.

Is the drive coupling in place ?-----Does your system use a 2 wire ( green and blue ) or 3 wire ( green , blue and black ) on the motor ?----Is manual release valve tight ?

Install a seal kit now.-----Cheaper than gears and bearings.----Seals wear out and could be half worn now.

Most folks would say to remove the idle stabilizer and throw it away as far as you can.

Off topic-----There is no head gasket on this Mercury motor.
