Just the 2 cylinder motors had the weaker lower units.

Not really you can find a lot of those with missing lower units.

Those were always cold blooded motors. I always grind the idle throttle stop back to allow more throttle for starting. Makes a huge difference.

There are also several different steering column mounted switches.

The 40/50/60 twins had weak lower units. If you find one broken more than likely the lower unit is the culprit.

Look at what Honda recommends for that motor and boat combo.

That prop is for people with disposable income. What does the Merc equivalent of your prop cost? Then add lab finishing to it and It's not $661. You need to understand that prop puts itself in the range of custom props not mass produced. If you look at those prices they are more inline.

Racer is right about dropping pitch. Speed usually doesn't change that much because the lower pitch prop spins faster. I would also bet your fuel economy won't change much if at all because the 17 will be easier for the motor to spin.
