Sounds like a bad switch box.-----There are of them.----You could test by swapping them and see if there is no spark on 1 , 3 and 5 and spark on 2 , 4 and 6.

Salty are you sure this motor has a 2 wire heat sensor , along with limp mode ?

Stop hooking up wires in the hope it fixes it.----Run to a shop that can solve this in minutes.

I doubt you will find a flywheel key on an inline 6 model.

The first thing to do with your motor is a compression test.----Post the actual values here.

If it revs up before stalling , I think it is running out of fuel.

There is a spring affair on the choke linkages.----A much mis-understood item.-----Maybe a previous owner was baffled by it and hooked it up wrong.----Remember we can not see , hear or feel your motor !

In good condition and adjusted properly the idle very nicely !----Who told you they are " lumpy" at idle.

13-1/4 or 14"---diameter for 70 hp.

Sounds like it is running on 1 cylinder.---Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" or more on both leads ?

Some Mercury 4 strokes were also built by Yamaha.

???-----This motor just has a simple choke set up-----Closed or open only.-----No fancy adjustments of any kind !!----These carburetors do not have idle mixture screws either !

Could be a rev limiter.----Try a prop with 4" more pitch and test run.
