There really is no difference between the parts on an 82 and 85 model 90 HP.-----The 85 model might have oil injection with the issues that go along with that.-----I think an 82 IF in good condition is an excellent motor.-----A big " if " on condition.
Any warranty from the dealer ?----Go with the V-4 model.-----But have a good look at it and and test compression.----In good condition that 90 HP will troll for hrs with no issue.------You will need to look at a new water pump impeller.---Also need to look at VRO if still equipped with...
A conventional 2 stroke does not NEED TO BURN OIL to run.----But it is something that happens.-----Oil is mixed with gasoline to provide lubrication to the spinning / moving parts.------Consider that the E-TEC and others actually run like a 4 stroke for part of the cycle.----The air is...
Agreed-----In my younger days friends had a 1966 model 100 HP Johnson on a 17' deep V hull.-----Would pull 2 of us ( 25 years old ) up out of the water on slalom skis.----So check your motor condition and check your boat.
A shipping company would know how to support a boat.-------And new boats are incredibly strong.-----After all consider what happens when a boat hits a 2' or 3' wave at 30 miles / hour.
Oh so many people are unfamiliar with a 2 stroke engine.-------Fact-----When piston is near / at bottom of the cylinder the fresh air / fuel charge is pushed into the cylinder.----But the exhaust ports are open and some fresh fuel and oil are pushed right out the exhaust as piston moves...
They did not market a 140 HP in 1974 !!-----The model # is for a 1977 model !!----And 90 PSI means you need to test with another gauge.----Or charge the battery.----Or inspect starter motor and cables.
When exhaust covers are off you can inspect pistons / rings,----Broken rings are a known issue.----Post some pictures of exhaust ports showing the rings.
The high speed metering jet is screwed into the very bottom of the float bowl.----Idle fuel goes through them as well I believe.----You have to remove the drain plug to remove / clean them properly.-----This jet is hidden and often overlooked !
High speed jet is in the very bottom of the float bowl.------And when you use the primer fuel goes directly into the motor.----This fuel bypasses the metering circuits in the carburetors.----This would suggest ( to me ) that something was missed in your carburetor work.----Stop revving the motor...
If you get 16 meg ohms on the bulb than the bulb is not the cause of the breaker tripping.-----I say you have too much load on the circuit.----Therefor the breaker trips as it is supposed to.------
With plugs out it should turn really smooth.--You should not be applying voltage to both wires at the same time , or perhaps I mis-interpret your post ???----Do a full evaluation of this motor before spending beer tokens on parts !!!
