A Couple of Questions before 5.7L to 350Mag

I will going to get the boat out of storage, this weekend. One of the projects planned, before the boat hits the water at the end of May, is converting it from a 5.7L to a 350Mag. I have the cast-iron highrise and a 750 Weber that came of an early 90's Mag. I rebuilt the carb, and added an...

    First Alpha Water Pump Replacement

Went very smooth, by the Merc book. Very similiar to the small outboards I've done, just bigger and heavier. Did the complete kit. The oil seal carrier gave a little fight, otherwise very easy. The old one didn't look worn at all, but since I purchased the boat 2 years ago, replaced...

DonS - Question on your U-Joint recommendation

    Don,

I was rereading your winterization steps, over at Bayliner forums. Very good info and refresher, even though I am getting ready for the de-winterizing process. It did generate some questions, that I couldn't answer via the Merc manuals. (sorry, I need to find my userid and...

    Post Your Regional Lures

While we all get to see the national lures in the Bass Pro and Cabela's catalogs, there is a world of regional lures out there. Many times it is just a regional builder, that made a copy of the big name lure. That is not too exciting. What is, are the unique lures that are being done by small...

60 degrees in NY, means boat on the water

Its been 60 degrees, two days in a row. Today it was calm and sunny. Perfect for the end of walleye fishing (3/15). River was clear of ice. Took the startcraft out from noon to dark. Great weather, plus we caught twelve walleyes from 14-19", plus one smallie. There were a dozen other boats...

Sit On Top Kayaks for Fishing

Anyone here use the sit on top style kayaks for fishing? I have fished from a sit inside style kayaks, and did not enjoy that, after a half day of fishing. From web searches, the sit on top, seem to be much better for fishing. I am looking for something to fish 1-5 acre ponds, and sections of...

Poll: Cabelas or Bass Pro Retail Store

Just curious: for those of you that have been in both, which do you prefer and why? Also, because all stores are not created equal, list the locations.

I recently was in both the Bass Pro in Harrisburg Pa, and Cabelas in Hamburg Pa. I'd give the nod to Cabelas, for more displays...

    Pond Bass

This last summer, started to explore and get permission to fish a number of small farm ponds, in our area. One, rather close to us, has a very healthy population of 17-19" Bass. Just a 1 acre pond, with lots of moss and frogs. Not the typical stunted bass ponds. Here are a couple of pics of...

    Son's Mud Eye

Joe caught this one, late fall, and had to drag it up the bank.

But it wasn't big enough to beat dad's, from the prior year! :D
Recommendation of First Bait Caster

My son is looking for advice on a first bait caster reel. Initially, it will be used for casting and retrieving crank baits and stick baits. Plans to use 10lb test, maybe 12lb. While I have a few bait casters, they are mainly for trolling or large bait fishing. ie I don't cast them that much...

Sport C racing and the 40C

From one of Elvin's recent posts, he mentioned searching on Sport C racing. Well, I did just that today. I must say, I was surprised to see so many 40C's on so many racing boats! In fact, there were many with the 80's Nissan paint scheme. I probably went 10 years on our lake without seeing...

Help me catch fish in Tampa Bay

I am on work assignment, and will be in the Tampa area for about 4 weeks. I am a NE freshwater fisherman, and only have fished the saltwater, a few times. The motel is on the Bay (North Rockypoint), and have been doing a little fishing, using shrimp. Catching a bunch of small strange looking...

    Winter Project, Almost Done!

Well, considering it didn't start till the end of March, with numerous other interupts, it will be complete before some of my other projects! Anyway, just a few minor things left, and should be water testing on Sunday. What started out as a floor replacement, ended up with new...

Son wants to do a catfish contest

The local VA holds a 2 day catfish contest every year. My son wants to participate in this years event (June 4/5), but we don't have much catfish experience. We have caught them occasionaly (channel cats), while fishing for other species. I believe the typical contest winner is in 12-14lb...

Walleye opens in NY on Saturday (who is heading out?)

Getting the small boat ready. Son and I will hit the river at 6AM. Usually a slow day, but it is more of a tradition than opening of trout, for us. Who else is planing to be out on NY water on Saturday?

    Glad I checked for leaks

I almost didn't test it. Never remember any water getting in, and everything seemed tight. I filled the boat to just above the old floor line and found a couple of small leaks in rivets in the bow, on the center line, just as it starts to curve up. A hammer and a back-up sledge...

    5' x 9' plywood still available?

I have called around a number of local lumber yards, to order 5' x 9' X 1/2" plywood, either douglass fir ext grade or marine grade. They make it seem that 5x9 is not made anymore, or at least not available from their suppliers.

Really prefer getting the 5x9, because it will require...

60's Starcraft Floatation Foam Blocks (reusing/replace)

Started the floor replacement on my 60's 14' alum Starcraft. The floatation foam, looks like standard styrofoam cut in long blocks and laid ontop of the cross ribs. Some was damaged by mice, while other parts are acting as a water sponge that doesn't seem to ever dry out??? About 50% looks...
