    Boating Cartographer

I fly big airplanes for a living. This morning I flew from Europe to the the U.S. All along the coast of Canada are a series of fixes that are used as "Coast-in" points for airplanes crossing the North Atlantic. They're also used as "Coast-out" fixes for airplanes heading the opposite...

    Long River Trip Stats

Several folks have inquired here about making extended boat trips on lakes and rivers. To give folks who might be contemplating such a trip a baseline from which to plan, here are some statistics from a trip on the Tennessee River I just made in a 1984 21' Sea Ray cuddy, my fifth long river...

    Metal Shavings On MR-1 Plug

I'm changing the drive oil on my 1984 MR-1 drive before making a 600-mile trip (40-45 hours engine run time) on the Tennessee River. The plug magnet has some metal shavings that seem to be slightly more than I'm used to seeing. This metal has been collected in 17 hours.

Water Dripping From Transom Screw Hole

In the process of replacing it, I removed the pitot bracket from the transom of my '84 Sea Ray cuddy this evening. Water immediately began dripping from the lowest screw hole. I watched it and timed it- a drip every two seconds for at least 20 minutes. I stopped watching after that. The boat...

    DP-S Shifting

I recently noticed that when shifting from neutral to forward with my DP-S drive, it is taking a moment to to make the change. There doesn't seem to be a commensurate delay when shifting from neutral to reverse. Is there an issue that needs to be addressed?

    Cleaning Outdrive

I'm going to pull my Merc MR-1 equipped boat out of the water next week. It has been in the water since mid-April and the outdrive will be a gunky mess! I need "best practice" ideas on how to clean it.

Setting Jack Stands to Support Tandem Axle Trailer

I'm going to remove all four wheels from my tandem axle trailer while it has a 5,000 pound boat on it. I plan to set the two pairs of jack stands at four points around the trailer frame and not on the axles. Is this the best way to do this? Better dumb questions than dumb mistakes.

    Fluctuating Oil Pressure- Bad Sender

The oil pressure indication on my Merc 228R I/O was fluctuating 5-10psi. This engine is 30 years-old with 775 hours. I feared the worst, but carefully troubleshot the issue and discovered the cause was the oil pressure sender. It was easy to replace and now my oil pressure is steady. I...

    Too Much Boat?

Looks like a mismatch to me. A commenter reported he met the rig on a narrow road and the driver was going too fast for conditions. There is a major boat yard in the area. Boat, truck crash on KY 93 removed

Chunk of Cavitation Plate Broke Off

I put my 1984 Sea Ray cuddy in the water for the first time this season. Enroute to the marina via the Ohio River (about 10 miles), a chunk of the cavitation plate of the MR-1 outdrive cracked and broke off. The section is about 10 inches long and the missing part starts at the "fin" anode at...

    MR-1 Gear Oil Quantity Check

As part of winter layup last fall, I changed the oil in my MR-1 outdrive. I'm getting the boat ready to go for this weekend and I checked the gear oil level by removing the vent screw at the top of the drive. When I turned the screw about one full turn, there was a brief noise that sounded...

    Thunder Over Louisville 2014

Anybody planning to be on the Ohio River for Thunder 2014? I'm planning to be there in my 21' Sea Ray cuddy at least for the Blue Angels. Whether I stay for the fireworks depends on the debris level and number of boats. I really don't like the mad rush of boats afterwards, plus I've got a...

    Bottom Painting Issue

I had the bottom of my 1984 Sea Ray cuddy repainted by a local shop with a good reputation. I went to check on it today and the boat was done and back on the trailer. To my surprise, I noticed rectangular unpainted patches where the boat bottom rested on hull supports while being painted. To...

    Liquid Rollers Bunk Lubricant

I have used silicone spray to lubricate the bunks on my boat trailers. While browsing the shelves in the boating section of a variety store near Kentucky Lake, I ran across "Liquid Rollers" by Marykate, a CRC brand. My Four Winns trailer was due for bunk lubricant so I decided to give it a...

Change in Shift Behavior After Drive Pull

Drive: DP-S Duoprop Engine: 5.0 GXiB I had the drive pulled in the spring for routine service. Due to weather, schedule, etc., this weekend was the first opportunity I've had to use the boat. The shifting behavior is different than I remember it being from last season. Specifically, when...

Any iBoaters Near Nottingham in the UK?

I have a 60-hour layover in Nottingham arriving early morning August 17 and departing early evening August 19. Any iBoaters near there interested in boating activities with a Yank? I can hire a car or hop a train. It may involve one other person depending on whether a colleague wants to join me.

    Replacing '80s Sea Ray Portlights

I got zero response in the Restoration section, so I'll give it a shot here. For better ventilation in the cuddy, I'd like to replace the portlights on my 1984 Sea Ray cuddy with screened models that open. Is this feasible? If so, what manufacturer and model? For reference of size and...

Replacing "Cat Eye" Sea Ray Portlights

For better ventilation in the cuddy, I'd like to replace the portlights on my 1984 Sea Ray cuddy with screened models that open. Is this feasible? If so, what manufacturer and model? For reference of size and design, the portlight style is the one seen on most 1980s vintage Sea Ray cabin boats.

    Bilge Drain Plug Assembly Replacement

I'm replacing the garboard assembly that drains the bilge on my 1984 Sea Ray cuddy. The picture shows the surface area around the hole in the transom where the garboard assembly is inserted. The old assembly didn't leak, but the depression missing gelcoat at the 3-4 o'clock position bothers...
