Rivet alternative - aluminum hull repair

I have about 7 rivets that I can’t replace with rivets due to a big dent in a rib area. I decided to use stainless machine screws and nylon lock nuts and a gob of marine Tex around the screw head (bottom of hull) and Gluvit on the inside. I’m not fond of the idea, but it’s all I can come up...

Which alloy for solid aluminum rivets?

Seems to be 2 camps on solid rivet alloys required for repairing aluminum boats. Some say go soft 1100f some say go harder with 27xx alloy. I’ve used both and the 100f alloy is night and day easier. I read that the higher alloy was to be preheated??

Difficulty replacing rivets in an aluminum hull.

Hey everyone, I’ve run into some troubles replacing some rivets on an aluminum hull. Some of the rivet heads on my hull were badly corroded, I had difficulty finding centre or in some cases, I drilled the hole crooked. Punching out the remaining rivet has left an oblong hole on the inside. How...

    Poor boy link and sync?

Is there a way to do a ink and sync on a Johnny-Rude triples? I don’t have special tools such as a piston stop tool, tachometer and a test wheel. If the timing light is a standard automotive light, I’ve got that covered. I could make a piston stop tool from a spark plug base. in any case, is...

Tachs for 1980’s to mid 90’s Johnson Evinrudes

I’m trying to buy a tachometer that will work with 1980’s and 1990 Johnson Evinrude triples. I’ve found some with “system check” lights that are 1996 and up. My newest motor is a 1995. Will they still work for rpm readings? The system check isn’t huge for me but I will be upgrading to even newer...

Is there a better gear oil pump out there?

I don’t know what it is, but I can’t seem to find one that lasts. Is there a better gear oil pump out there? I pulled mine out to use it today and it would not pump oil all the way up the intake tube and into the hose. The steel threaded coupler seems to have lost its O-ring friction and the...

Fastening choices - floor replacement in aluminum boat.

I’m tossing up ideas on how to clad my plywood floor with nautolex and I’m seeing 2 choices; Option a) clad/wrap each board with nautolex and rivet through with a series of large flange rivets everywhere. It’s going to be a busy look but easiest to pull off. Pros; not easily done but I can...

Outboard work stand with hoisting abilities?

I've been using a 300 or 400 lb hitch mounted game hoist for lifting OMC triples lately. Anyone own a big hardtop Chief?

There’s a really cool retro hardtop Chieftain for sale near me. I really like the open feeling of the cabin. This looks like a great fishing/weekending machine. The price is too rich for my pocket at the moment. I think I’d prefer one of these over an Islander. It even has a fridge. a full...

For all of you recreational boaters, how old is your outboard? I just “upgraded” to a 1995 and I’m wrenching on an 1986 and 1990 for fun. The parts dealers I’m dealing with are saying they “don’t stock parts on motors that old”. I find that statement quite odd because there are millions of...
