    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

As I worked through the project I kept discovering more things that were missing. This thing was little more than the two outer fiberglass shells, a trailer, and rebuilfable drive components. All in all, I think I faired pretty well on cost. I think I did well on time as well. I stuck...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I recently added up my expenditures on this project. I counted materials that could only be used on this project, special tools that I doubt I will ever use on another boat, parts, and consumables. Consumables are items like brushes, solvents, gloves, tyvek suit, etc. I did not include parts...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Third outing. Trailering, launch and retrieval were blunder-free this time. Took the whole family out today. It ran pretty well. We played for awhile before it quit. Just like the second trip, it wouldn't get above 2,300 rpm even with the 17P prop. Timing? Chinese module? Tried a...

    '90 Maxum 2100SR - restoration & conversion

If it's OMC Cobra, you'll need some special tools to set the cable adjustment. If it's Mercruiser...I got no experience. I know they're black and they fit the same transom cutout.

Cobra or Merc? Can you run it on muffs to check it?

Wow, that IS a mean hook. That would cause a performance issue, for sure. Be sure to keep the back edge (where the bottom meets the transom) nice and sharp-edged. Avoid temptation to round it off. That helps with speed by allowing the water to shear off cleanly when you're up on plane.

Here's an idea I have been brainstorming: Use the resistance signal from the tilt/trim sensor to trigger a pair of switches. Probably using NPN transisters or and op amp with a pair of potentiometers to choose the trigger points. One would activate a light if the drive is UP (out of the water)...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Indeed, this was the milestone that marks the end of the build. There is more I want to do, but that is all fluff and accessories. I need to update my cost sheets, but I am still near the 5K original estimate on parts, materials and consumables. I originally said one year, but after a few...

Thanks, Scott. Good suggestions. I was thinking that something in the truck might work.

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Today was splash number 2!! This was also the first time I ever launched it by myself. There was a storm building up very quickly, which added to the excitement. I took off, and headed east. About a minute later, I made a turn to head back and could see the wall of rain already on the...

With the timing set and the manifold we'll sealed, I was able to set the idle mixture. Aside from all of the above, I finally washed it and applied Ceramic coat spray on stuff. Quite impressed with it so far.

Next, I adjusted timing. I never could get base timing set with the shunt that I made, so I ordered one and it was no better. Now as soon as I connect 12v to the third wire on the shunt, it stalls. The book says that after setting base timing, check advance: should be 15° at 1,000 rpm, so I...

So the pump is fine. The gauge adapter was not opening the Shroeder valve on my test port. Next, I readjusted the rockers to quiet some clatter.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

If you end up cutting for a DIN, support the dash on a piece of plywood or rigid foam for support. Use a jigsaw blade with downward teeth. Cut the ply/foam as you cut the plastic. Hold it down as you go so it can't lift up. You want about 3 teeth in contact with the thickness. Too course...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

You could buy a strip of white and a strip of black (acrylic) and the solvent "glue" used for that stuff, and laminate the part yourself. basically, you run a stream of the solvent down the middle so that it flows outward as you lower the top layer on the bottom later. The goal is to avoid...

    Zero fuel pressure?

I don't trust that reading. Also, it did not hold at that pressure. By the time I fixed a leaking fitting and tested again, it was reading zero again. I removed the gauge and found that the tip had broken and was not pushing down the pin in the Schroeder valve. I did also determine that my...

Now is a good time to stock up on cheap sunglasses to keep on your shiny boat.

Sounds similar to my first launch; a blend of success and disappointment. But don't lose heart. Take a breath, make a list and finish your build. We'll be here cheering you on.

    Zero fuel pressure?

UPDATE: It has pressure, now! I did a flow test: I disconnected the line before the gauge, added a hose and a quart bottle. Supposed to run the engine for 45 seconds and get a half bottle. At 30 seconds I had a quart! Plenty of flow. I reconnected the lines, restarted and saw 12psi on the...
