1982 Merc 150: Power trim issue

The engine is running pretty well now and I am moving on to an issue with the power trim. From the control lever, the large square tilt button works fine (tilting engine up) and the trim toggle switch at the top of the lever works fine to moving the engine down. However, the trim toggle switch...

    Access to bilge pump

I am a little stumped. I need to gain access to the bilge pump in this 1978 Penn Yan Explorer. The only access is via the long, but short access door at the bottom of the splash well (see picture below). The pump is approximately 12" (?) below the level of the sole. I know this is similar to...

    How far to move wheels?

If one needs to increase their tongue weight, how do you know how far to move the wheel carriage back? Any rules of thumb? Is it a trial and error situation? The current tongue weight on my trailer is about 200 lbs. I need to increase this to about 250. The boat is as far forward on the...

    fuel-water separators/fuel filters and ethanol

Someone was telling me yesterday that there may be a need for ethanol friendly version of these components.

I am well aware of the impact to fiberglass fuel tanks, but this is the first I have heard any issue related to filers.

Can anyone comment?

Thanks

1982 merc 150 waterpump change: shift issue

I have replaced a number waterpumps in various mercury engines over the years (8 or 10???). The latest was in a used 1982 Merc 150 that I picked up last fall. As the procedure dictates, I put the engine in gear and changed out the pump.

After reassembling the leg, the lower unit...

    Sea Foam questions

I finally found this product at a local chain autoparts store! Now I want to use it on a 1982 Merc 150.

I have read the de-carb procedure. I would do it exactly as described, but my two extra portable fuel cans are full of bad fuel. I don't really like the idea of getting...

    Paint chrome plated brass?

I saw an episode of Ship Shape TV where a T-top fabricator painted the aluminum welds with an aluminum looking paint to cover the heat discoloration.

I am currently refinishing a 1978 boat that has chrome railings and fittings. The rails themselves are fine, but the mounting pieces...

    Painting hull: Registration sticker?

Question for everyone. I have only painted new home-built boats in the past. I am now painting a 1985 fiberglass boat. I will replace the registration numbers and the manufacturer decals, but I don't know what to do with the registration sticker that is good through 2008. Can these be...

    Boston Whaler previously painted???

I am helping a friend to refinish is 1985 Whaler. It is a 17' Montauck. While looking at some of the damage areas on the hull, it almost appears to me that the boat was painted in the past. In the picture, you can see the grey color surface which is just below the topcoat color. To me, it...

Why dual fuel tanks with a single engine?

My new project boat has two 28 gallon fuel cells, but one engine. What is the advantage of this? If one gets bad fuel, the other probably will as well since one is usually filling them at the same time from the same pump.

1982 150hp: How do you get the cowling off?

    I feel like an idiot....

I can't figure out how to get the cowling off. I know the front panel conceals the latches for the cowling around the engine, but I can't figure out how to get the front panel off.

Any thoughts? My other merc had a knob that I had to turn.

    1957 Johnson 7.5 as a kicker???

I am thinking that this may not be the best idea, but let me ask your opinion. I have a 1957 Johnson 7.5 that is in excellent shape and has very few hours. The engine has been in my family since it was new.

What do you think about using this as a kicker on a 20' runabout for...

    My new-to-me boat/winter project

This boat will be my winter project and the family boat for the 2006 season. It is a 1978 20' Penn Yan Explorer. I know Penn Yan is known for their tunnel hull drive systems, but this boat is a rare outboard model. From what I can tell, the outboard models were special order and only a couple...

    trailer sway at 60

I was towing a 20' boat on a single axle trailer over the weekend. Boat, motor and trailer weigh about 3300lbs. It towed fine until I reached a little over 60mph. At that speed, the trailer began to fish tale a little bit. As soon as I let up on the gas and slowed a couple of mph, it settled...
