    my new motor, Tohatsu M35B

Hi, All. I just picked-up a Tohatsu M35B. Looks good, sounds good and shifts smoothly. It has electric start, but pull starts easily as well. I didn't get a chance to lake test it. The previous owner says it setup for 12 years so the first order of business will be the water pump and lower...

25hp Vs. 40hp weight and performance gain

I was thinking about a newer motor. So this guy is offering me a 1994 Johnson 40hp long shaft, electric start, tiller with tilt assist for my 1981 Johnson 25hp, plus some cash. Nada says the 40hp weighs 185lbs and my 25hp weights 107lbs. My boat rated max hp = 50hp as a remote setup. I'm...

grease leak around pilot shaft and swivel bracket

I noticed a considerable amount of grease between the neck of the pilot shaft (79) and swivel bracket (61). There is a lube point below and I'm thinking the previous owner put too much grease in. Could this be a bad thrust washer seal (77)? Seems like a pain to replace. Any ideas...

    problems starting 25hp Johnson 1981

Just wondering if anyone had any tips for starting hot? Seems to start-up OK when cold, usually within 2-3 pulls. It will sometimes die out though, but will start right back up. Btw, it runs like a champ and idles fairly well once it gets going. I have more trouble getting her started hot...

    "make me an offer" (vent)

I know lot of folks like to use this tactic for getting multiple offers, but it's getting to be irritating to me. Case in point. I saw an old evinrude on craigslist with the usual story... setup 5 years, don't know what condition is. So to me this is a junk motor or non-runner. I don't...

OK run with a bad clutch dog?

Just as I was getting on plane she went "bang!!". My heart sank cause I knew what this indicates. This was only my 4th time out with this new to me motor. Anyway, my question is. Would it be OK to run slow with the motor? I just don't want to miss out on a fishing season tinkering with this...

    tire & wheel bearing questions

Hi, guys. I'm new to boating and have a new to me trailer. I could really use some help. I just got my boat from storage and need to get mytrailer road worthy. Questions. 1) It has some sort of lube system on the wheel bearings, but I don't know what it is? See pics. 1a) Shouldn't it have a...

    boat max hp rating?

My boat (16' Crestliner tinnie) was originally a console steer from the factory. I got a copy of the spec from Crestliner. It had a max rating of 50hp. At some point in time, someone removed the console, making it a tiller steer. My question is how much does that affect the max hp rating...

hey northern boys, pull your motors out yet?

I know the lakes are still frozen here in minnesota, but I'm anxious to wake up my outboard. I have a project motor I want to see run. We've been staying above freezing lately (daytime), lets hope it continues. Just curious if anyone ran their motor in a barrel yet? jasper

    bidding on '65 Evinrude 35hp

Seller says motor is in working condition, but has a small crack in lower unit. Long shaft, electric start, tiller handle and comes with remote control and cables. I was hoping to find another 1960s 33-35hp project motor, but didn't want a cracked lower though. Anyway, he was asking $180, but...

    verify waterpump part

Where does part #54 (o-ring) go? From the diagram, it appears to go on the impeller housing. Mine did not have one, but there is an o-ring on the driveshaft just under the splines. Is this what the diagram is referring to, or should the wp have an o-ring? thanks. edit: '62 johnson 28hp

    '62 28hp. Adding push/pull cable controls?

Was wondering would these work for me? '62 Johnson 28hp. Can these push/pull controllers easily added to an outboard for throttle and shift? What else is needed? Also, the cables are 9' long. Can they be coiled or shortened and still work? I recall tashasdaddy had a project where he added...

    1962 Johnson 28hp gearcase removal

Hi, All. I'm new to outboard maintenance. I have a project motor and one of the first things I need to do is to remove the gearcase and check the clutch dog. The previous owner, a outboard mechanic says it was jumping out of forward gear in the test tank and he suspects the clutch dog. Will I...

    1962 Johnson 28hp

Picked-up a 1962 Johnson 28hp (RX-10) as a project motor a couple days ago. The previous owner mentioned it sat for several years, but ran good before. So I took a gamble. It was only $50. Plus it came with a good 2 wheel metal cart. I tried to check compression last nite, but it was hard...
