How to replace a clutch in a 2.3 hp Honda outboard.

I bought one of those for my brother and liked it a lot, it's super light and worked well. As mentioned above, it's like a weed whacker, you have to give it gas to make the prop spin, it shouldn't spin with any force at idle. That said, first check the prop to be sure the hub isn't slipping...

    Stiff steering

Without having any idea what you're looking at, it's difficult to give tips. If it's a rack and pinion type deal, then yes you can attach the rack to the wrong side and the steering will be opposite. Ask me how we found that out as teenagers, and took the boat out anyway... because we were...

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

From memory, on a cold start or if I pull the rope really slowly on mine, the light will flicker. But once it has been running, or you've pulled the rope enough times to prime the oil pump, a good pull on the rope builds enough oil pressure to keep the light out. I bought mine (6HP Tohatsu)...

EPA mixture screw covers 2003 BF50

The caps break off, leaving a headless screw. I used a left handed drill bit to remove them on mine, they're not "tight" like a regular screw so they came right out super easy. The part numbers for the replacements are around here somewhere.

6hp 4 stroke tohatsu (mercury) won’t reach WOT under load

How big and heavy is the boat? What is the approximate weight? Maybe you've just got too much boat for 6HP to get on plane.

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

That's not going to do much. You need to do what I mentioned earlier; open the throttle and spray some into the carburetor through the metal screen.

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

But he says it doesn't run on starting fluid, which is a real head scratcher because even an engine super low on compression will run on starting fluid.

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

Once the oil pump is primed the light won't come on while pulling the rope. I don't think that motor has a low oil cutoff anyway.

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

We've been going on the theory that it was working OK when it went into storage, but I'm staring to doubt that this was the case..

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

If you've got spark and compression, there's no reason it shouldn't run with starting fluid. Are you sure it was working when it went into storage? Maybe it is time to double check the timing..

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

Have you tried a new spark plug? And/or are you sure you're getting a big bright spark out of the one you have now?

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

I really doubt you need a new one, just a very thorough cleaning. Though it should run momentarily on starting fluid. Maybe give it a double spray of the fluid and see if it runs for a few moments.

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

It has an automatic compression release to make starting easier. Either check the service manual to see what compression number you should be seeing with the compression release working, or disable the compression release and try again. But if it was working just fine when it went into...

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

Are we talking about a 2T or 4T? I was assuming a 4T. Also I've used starting fluid with 2-strokes many many many times, it's fine. When I was a teenager back in the early 90's my buddies boat had an old Mercury 150 v6 2-stroke that refused to cold start, so we kept a can of starting fluid in...

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

For the starting fluid; if that's like my Tohatsu 6HP then there's a metal screen over the air intake, facing downward, on the front of the carburetor. Open the throttle to full throttle, spray the starting fluid up into that screen. Maybe a 1-second spray. Then close the throttle to about...

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

Before you get into timing, what is the history of the motor? Was it put into storage with gas still in it? Did you try some starting fluid? It's a whole lot easier to give it a shot of fluid and see if it fires, than taking things apart to verify timing. With a motor that new, if it's got...

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

It's OK if the filter still has some air in it. If you open the drain on the carburetor, does fuel come out? Try opening the throttle, spray in a little starting fluid, close the throttle to about 1/4 throttle then give it a good pull. If it won't start with starting fluid then the next...

Honda BF50 bogs down, expert mechanic perplexed. What say you masters of mechanics?

If the carbs still have the original EPA locked fuel screws, you definitely need to get those things out of there and replace with truly adjustable fuel screws. That will make a big improvement in overall running and only takes a few minutes to do. If it only bogs momentarily when opening the...

Honda BF50 bogs down, expert mechanic perplexed. What say you masters of mechanics?

Does it bog momentarily then come up to full power, or does it just never make power when you open the throttle?

    2012 Tohatsu MFS20C - Losing Oil

Is there any smoke out the exhaust, and how does the spark plug look? The compression rings and oil control rings are separate, it's not all that unusual to have a motor that runs well but the oil control rings are letting oil into the cylinder. With that much oil use, if it's leaking you're...
