    sealing fiberglass edge.

I am installing a swim platform and I had to grind the edge to match the transom angle. I now have exposed fiberglass and want to seal it. It is in a location that will get limited sun and is not visible. I have epoxy and vinylester and was going to seal it with vinylester. After the...

    Options for stainless steel bracket

I need to make a bracket similar to this for my swim platform. Based on a mock-up I did I need to use a piece that is 8" wide with a bend 2" from the top at the same angle as in this bracket. If I did it that way, it would mount directly to the bottom of the swim platform. Anyone that has...

Tyvek suits are nice, but holy crap are they hot!

Did some fiberglass work on the swim platform and suited up after reading all the safety advice on here. Tyvek suit, gloves, respirator and full goggles. Wasn't even that warm, but holy crap they retain heat. I better get all my fiberglass work done before it actually gets hot.

Parts list for R&R transom shield.

Since I am pulling the engine and transom shield off I need to order all the parts that need to be or should be replaced as part of the removal and replacement. Anyone know if they make a kit that has everything in it that I will need or will I need to piece it together? Any other parts on the...

Pulling motor- better to pull the lag bolts or unbolt and leave mounts in place.

To repair my gelcoat on my transom I have to pull the motor and transom plate. Cobalt uses all fiberglass in their stringer system and motor mounts. No wood. Would it be better to pull the lag bolts out and leave the mounts attached to the motor or unbolt the motor from the mounts and leave...

    making a curved template.

I am working on preparing our swim platform for attachment to the hull. The transom on our boat is curved and the radius of the curve changes throughout the transom. I want a good template so the fit is good before I put it on. I tried cardboard, but at the end of the day I was not realy happy...

I need to do some minor fiberglass/gelcoat work. The first will be reshaping the edge of a swim platform. VP 8.1 Gi-B rebuild

I'm preparing for some transom work on our boat and the motor will be coming out as part of that work. The engine and drive (DP-SM) have about 350 hours on them and I figure now is a good time to freshen it up and replace items that might be going bad in the near future. What parts should I be...

Water in transom, 2002 Cobalt 226 and new problem found.

I am working on installing a swim platform. While doing this work I decided to reseal the other screw holes in the transom and the garboard plud. Pulled out the screws holding the speedo tube and the temp gauge and all the wire clips. Imagine my surprise when one of the holes wept water. They...

    Sealing transom around garboard plug.

Part of my spring list is to reseal the garboard plug mount in the transom. When I pulled it out I was disappointed at the size of the hole as it is a bit bigger than I would like to have. I cleaned it out and sealed the wood with some additional slow set marine epoxy and then filled a couple...

Volvo 8.1 Gi hunting for idle - where to start.

Have a 2002 VP 8.1Gi that likes to hunt for idle after running at WOT. The motor has about 325 hours on it, regular maintenance, new filters, good gas. I boat in fresh water and the batteries are fully charged. When hunting for idle, the RPM range will move between 750-1000 rpm. It never...

    Stereo Upgrade project with pics

Newer to iboats and I like seeing all the work people are doing to their boats, new and old. Thought I would share last year's stereo upgrade that grew a bit out of control as it progressed. We have a 2002 Cobalt 226 with a Samson Tower. We spend most of our time cruising and floating. She is...
