7.4 MPI exhaust manifold bolts, are they SS?

Are the factory bolts stainless steel? Mine were a little rusty, but not terribly so. If they are not stainless steel, is there a good reason to not use SS bolts on the manifolds?

7.4 MPI exhaust manifold plugs leaking

Each of my exhaust manifolds has a pair of Torx (huge Torx) head plugs installed on the side that faces the engine. They are located above the exhaust ports. 3 out of the 4 on my engine are leaking water. The manifolds seem to be in good shape otherwise. Is this common? Should I remove them and...

    Electric over hydraulic conversion

Late last year, I had an opportunity to tow a big flatbed trailer with electric brakes. I really liked the "right now" response of them and decided to install electric over hydraulic on my trailer this Spring. Has anyone here done this? I'm planning to purchase a Titan BrakeRite II Severe-Duty...

2000 7.4 MPI fuel pressure question

Does the fuel injection system monitor fuel pressure and adjust injector opening cycles as needed or does it have a regulator and assume the fuel pressure is fixed?

    Bravo gimbal bearing removal question

Is there supposed to be some sort of snap ring or clip behind the gimbal bearing? I just wiped all the grease off and looked and there appears to be nothing holding it in place. I don't want to pound away with the slide hammer until I'm sure it will come out.

Changes to Bravo gears, cone clutch and shifter

Looking through my service manual 11, pages 3A-20 through 3A-24, there's a mention of changes and ways to tell the parts apart, but not what the changes were. What's the difference between the new and old cone clutch and shift cam/yoke? Just curious.

    B1 driveshaft housing on a B3? and other ?

My Bravo 3 serial number is OL470685 and it's a 2:0. Something failed in it today and the pinion gear is completely destroyed. I can't even pull the U-joint assembly out of the driveshaft housing because the pinion teeth are all peened over which enlarged the diameter of the gear. I pulled large...

7.4 MPI with "odd" starting behavior

My 2000 7.4 MPI has had an odd behavior in the 5 years I've owned it. The starter will spin the engine over a bit, the engine will stop dead for a very brief period (I can see the engine stop if the engine hatch is open), then continute to turn and start right up. It acts like it has too much...

Simple tips for optimizing your rig

I've been towing "heavy" for my '99 Durango for the last 5 years. Here's a couple of simple and cheap modifications that have really helped: Drilled and slotted front brake rotors. High performance brake pads Replace brake fluid every two years, only use DOT4 This dramatically improved brake...

    DFI or carbureted?

If one were looking at a early 2000s-vintage 115 to 150 HP Johnson/Evinrude, and longevity, reliability, and low repair cost were a higher priority than fuel consumption, what would be the more desireable induction system? I'm thinking the carbureted engine would be easier and cheaper to keep...

Recommend a small, OB, lake boat, please

Absolute requirements: Used 16 to 19 feet bowrider or deckboat fiberglass construction outboard powered fiberglass cockpit liner (no carpet over plywood) Less than $9,001 So far, the only boat I know that fit all these requirements is the Four Winns 170 Horizon of the early 2000s. Am I...

2001 Johnson 115 Ocean Pro, good motor to buy?

A friend of mine is looking at a boat with one of these. Are there any compelling reasons to avoid buying this engine? I'd hate to see him buy the outboard equivalent of a Mercruiser 3.7 liter I/O.

    Alignment ? for Bravo 3

I recently replaced my U-joints. I'm wondering if the forward U joint yoke/shaft is a resonable substitute for the alignment tool. While it was apart for the new U joints, I coated it with grease and slid it home through the gimbal bearing and into the coupler. It went in with ease and the...

    Bravo 3 U-joint replacement

Looking through the service manual, it seems that the pinion and U joint assembly need ot be removed from the driveshaft housing to replace the U-joints. Why is that? Looking at the drive as it sits in my garage, the U-joints appear easy enough to access with the pinion installed in the housing...

    Bravo 3 U-joints "floppy"

My Bravo 3 has about well-maintained 400 hours. The U joints seemed a little noisier this Summer than they used to be, but I can feel no lash or runout in them at all and it's quite possible it's all in my head. The U joints are, however, very "floppy", meaning the bearings feel very loose and...

Merc 7.4MPI gen VI water shutters

The part number I have is 807166A1 and they are $88 a pair and would need to be ordered. I called my local shop and the woman at the parts counter (whom has never steered me wrong in 13 years) told me to get the, in stock, 807166A3 kit for $58. Supposedly it's superior and at $30 cheaper and in...

    Merc 7.4 starter just spins...

Engine is a 2000 7.4 MPI with around 250 hours. Here's what happened. Docked the boat to get ice cream after a full day of boating. 30 minutes later I tried to start the boat and the starter turned the engine over a little then stopped. Kind of sounded like a dead battery. I switched to the...

    Just saying thanks

Thanks to all the knowledgeable folks who post answers here. I recently changed my U joint bellows, shift cable bellows, and shift cable; and drilled and plugged my gimbal housing to tighten up my steering, using the service manual and advice I picked up here. While it was apart I also...

    Bravo shift cable tool question

Anyone know the thickness of the "core wire locating tool (p/n 91-17262a1). This is the one used to set the depth of the cable on the belhousing while adjusting the engine compartment end. I wish to make one of these today. Cheers
