    1981 Citation Marquis restoration...

Thanks. That gives me the confidence I need to proceed. With the braces screwed in from the outside, the hull won't be able to bow out (screws holding it against the wood) or flex in (the wood pushing against the hull). That was the intended outcome. I just needed enough reassurance it was...

If I brace it along that ridge (what is that outdent called? Or is it just decorative, along the side, above the waterline?) with four 2x2's as indicated, that should be sufficient? I'm not trying to overthink it... I'm trying to make sure I don't screw it up by bracing too low. However, if...

Here is an example of what would happen if I follow the interior gunwale (I assume that's what it's called) curvature from the inside and outside. The green and white dots follow straight across the hull (is that a chine or strake or...?; its tented out slightly from the side of the hull)...

Did you screw in (secure) your braces from the outside, to keep the hull from both flexing out or in, as I'm planning on doing?

The 2x2's can't be screwed in any higher than the edge of the inside of the cap, which is about 5" lower than the rubrail by the throttle on the starboard side and a bit less at the transom end. But I'm assuming the braces should all be fastened at the same height, from fore to aft. Having...

Ok, here's a revised copy of my image with four 2x2 brace points. Two brace points are basically as far forward and aft as possible, with two braces spaced evenly between the ends. Is the vertical location for the holes good?

Ok, let's go with the end of your first paragraph. "Your method of bracing from inside will work, but all those braces will be a pain in the arse to work around." That's all I need to know... I don't care about the hassle of working around the braces, I just need to know they'll work. Now...

Ok, picking up where we last left off, I've since removed the windshield (a 5-piece windshield, removed in 2 pieces... care to figure out how I managed that? :-D), pulled the rubrail "rubber" and preparing the hull for cap removal. Ah, the joy of drilling out all those rivets awaits me! I'm...

Question about using epoxy resin with 1708 cloth?

I hate to resurrect such an old thread, but... what fiberglass products for fiberglass boat restoration, are fully (100%) compatible (or meant/intended to be used) with epoxy resin? Are there different KINDS of 1708? Is there only ONE kind of 1708? Same goes for other different fiberglass...

If PL is the stuff in this thread, sounds like it's not ideal to use... https://forums.iboats.com/threads/pl-or-epoxy-to-attach-transom-to-outer-fiberglass-skin.358140/

I know CSM = Chopped Strand Mat (only usable with polyester or vinyl ester resin, which I won't be using), but what is PL?

I couldn't figure out why there was a layer of rotted fiberglass between the 1st and 2nd pieces of plywood, when I was tearing it all out. But what they probably did was attach the first piece of plywood against the outer skin, then fiberglass over it, then attached the middle I/O reinforcing...

I'm wondering... can new transom plywood be inserted in sections/pieces? In other words, like, say, two or three pieces (port, starboard, and center)? Obviously, pulling the cap would be the right/best way to do this, but I am just 1 person, and have no hoisting tools, no cradle, nor other...

    My 1981 Citation Marquis...

Biggest issue with that approach is that I have the existing fiberglass "lip" all around the transom, to tab to. I assume your approach is to grind all that away so the plywood just lays flat up against the rear skin, once you've slipped it in under the rear portion of the cap? I'm trying to...

Ok, decided to skip painting and put her back on the trailer (not perfectly; the rollers are not set to the correct positions, but I can adjust later). I'm working on the transom. I've gutted out the old, rotted plywood, and sanded down the inside of the outer skin as clean as I can imagine...

Free Boat, This thing is a badboy!

AMEN! That's the spirit! Same thing for me and my 1981 Citation Marquis! I only paid $250 for my boat and trailer on Craigslist. But invested lotsa hours and about $1,000+ in tools and paint and registration and... and... and... Loving every minute of it!

This is the current state of my transom. All rotted plywood removed. Inside of skin sanded down. The perimeter has about .5"-1" depth, but the inside is real bumpy. The red oval is where there is an indent conforming to the shape of the exterior, so that's not flat like the rest of the...

A little over 1 year later... I put my boat on a Brownell Boat Lifting System ($950) and pulled the trailer out... and restored it. New rollers, derusted it (Rustoleum Rust Removing Gel), and gave it a nice (if albeit sloppy (spray can)) white paint job, new wiring/lights, new winch/strap, etc...

Ok, I'm basically finished restoring my trailer, so back to working on the boat! I'm looking at repainting my boat. The hull (everything at/below the water line (which I assume is where the black tape/vinyl is) is the main priority, because it has to go back onto the trailer before March (wife...
