    Tach issues

The aftermarket tach [Faria] I purchased not that long ago won't give a reading below 1100 rpm. Meaning tach needle [with motor running] will not register rpms less then 1100 rpm even though the motor is running at a lower rpm. For the most part, the lower the engine rpms are the more erratic...

88' 85 hp Force. Seperate power trim/tilt ram w/single shock...2 wire motor. Seloc recommends replacing the oil for the trim/tilt unit since they advise against mixing oil from one manufacture with that of another. They even explain the steps on how to check and/or add oil when neccessary as...

    Adjusting air/fuel 85 hp

Hi everyone, Wow! been awhile since I've visited this forum. Greetings all. 1986/88 Force 85 hp. I am having a bit of difficulty in adjusting my motors air/fuel mix. It would seem that when I attempt to find the point where the motor is running too rich before setting the mixture halfway...

    Propeller forum gone?

Anyhow... Hi Frank, Upon looking up information on a new prop, [using Iboats Force prop finder] I read that if running an uncupped prop and switching to a cupped prop one should go down in pitch by 2. However, I also read that those with power trim do not need to make a reduction in pitch. And...

    wrist pin removal

Hi everyone, I need a little bit of info from you guys. Such as...how do I get the wrist pins out my 88' 85 hp force pistons. Actually, 86' 85 hp pistons. Seloc doesn't offer this specific info. There are no circlips to remove so I am assuming I need to heat the two wrist pin washers that keep...

    Tilt motor fill port

Okay...this is gonna sound a bit stupid but where's the fill port on my tilt motor. Seloc manual doesn't even mention my specific tilt assembly nor specify if there's a location common to most tilt fill ports. The tilt is off an 1988 85 hp. Two wire, single shock, single trim ram single tilt...

Help...Little shop of bores needs Pyschic

My engine needs a bore job. I am uncertain how much over-bore the cylinders are going to require. The machine shop needs the new pistons inorder to match cylinder bore with that of the piston. Yet, since I do not know how much the cylinders will have to be bored out too, I don't know what size...

    semi-clever non-cupped to cupped prop

I have heard that if one is going to switch from a 3 bladed non-cupped prop to a 3 bladed cupped prop, both of equal diameter, that it is recommended that the cupped prop be reduced in pitch. Example: 13" x 17" non-cupped prop replaced with a 13" x 15" cupped prop. Is this so? Also, what are the...

    Swapping stators

I have a 1988 85 hp Force. 856XB. I would like to replace the 7 amp stator with one that produces more amps. I notice that the 1989 on up Force motors come with either a 9 amp or a 16 amp stator. Aside from the obvious changes and additions that would have to be made to the charging circuit...

    Bent starter motor shaft

While attempting to get out on the water a couple of days ago and attempting to start the motor the starter failed to turn the motor over. Upon investigation into why, I found that the shaft on the starter motor had become bent to where the starter gear would bind up on the flywheel teeth...

    No problem

I would just like to say that despite the amount of hours I have put and continue to put upon my 1988 85 hp Force, model 856X8B, it just keeps going and going and going. Occasionally a part will require replacement. However, the motor has always brought us home once upon the water. I estimate...

    decarbon/ fouling plugs

I recently decarboned my 85 hp 1988 force engine using Johnson/Evinrude engine decarbonizing spray. The instructions recommend allowing 3 to 16 hours of soak time before running the motor. I let the motor sit for 4 hours before runnning the motor to "blow out" the resulting carbon. However, ever...

Switching to a hotter plug...wishful thinking

I noted that champion makes an inductive plug, a QL-16 V. The "Q" denotes it being an inductive plug. My particular Force uses a UL-18 V. Would the switch to the hotter running "QL-16 be too hot. According to Champion, each increase in number denotes an increase in combustion chamber temps...

88 85 hp Spark plug options

Due to RFI issues affecting my sonar unit, I would like to use a suppressor type inductive spark plug. However, Champion nor NGK list a suppressor plug that is equivalent to the UL-18V or the BUHX. Does anyone know of anyother plug that can be safely used. 1988 Force 85 hp. 856X8B "A" series motor

Can someone please inform me if it is required to replace the drive shaft seal located on the top of the water pump housing.
