How often do you damage a prop?

I am a first year boat owner, and just installed my 3rd prop for the season. The first one was destroyed, and totally my fault. For the 2nd one, I was driving really slowly in a lake, in 5 feet of water. With no warning, the bottom changed from 5 foot and weedy to 2-3 foot and rocky. I put...

    Removing green waterline

I let my boat sit in a fresh water lake over the weekend for the first time. Had a great weekend, but when I pulled it out tonight, I had a green line around my boat at the waterline. I tried some boat wash as soon as I got home, but it didn't take it off. Any advice on removing the green...

Longer battery cables on trolling motor

I have a 12V Minn Kota 55# transom mount trolling motor, and would like the battery cables to be about 2 feet longer. Anyone have any ideas on the easiest way to do this? I've been looking for extension wire for trolling motors, but haven't come across any... Thanks for any help.

    Help with openbow casting deck

I have an open bow boat that will be used mostly for family rides, tubing, skiing, etc. I will also bass fish from it, and would like to make some kind of casting platform on the bow. Whatever I do needs to be removeable for tubing trips, and I really don't want to modify the boat much. Would...

    Drilling in fiberglass

Does anyone have any general tips for drilling into fiberglass? I want to put some rod holders in my boat. So far, folks have told me to put tape down over the drill spot, to decrease the odds of chipping, and use lower RPMs for the drill. Any other advice? Thanks.

    Flusher (earmuffs) question

I would like to get a flusher for my boat, just so I can start it in my driveway before heading out for the day. Does anyone know if I need a special set, or can use a universal pair? My motor is an i/o Volvo Penta 3.0 L SX Drive. Thanks for any info!

    Question on propellers

When replacing a propeller, is it better to get one that fits "naturally" onto the outdrive vs. getting one that requires a hub kit? I have a Volvo Penta outdrive, and I could buy a Volvo prop for $164, or buy a Michigan Wheel prop + hub kit for $169. Does it make any difference which one I...

Please help me recover from a bad day

ugh. I launched my new boat for the first time today. The launch, and trial run went really well. However, I screwed up big time on the retrieve. I was approaching the dock, I decided I was coming in too fast, and tried to drift into reach of the dock. I ended up drifting over some rocks...

Help with crazy trolling motor mount ideas

I'm trying to figure out if I can mount a trolling motor on the bow of my boat, without drilling into the bow. The boat has handrails on the bow that are through bolted - so I've been thinking about using them to build some sort of trolling motor mount that can be completely removed when...

    Launching with kids

I'm wondering if those of you who launch with young kids have any advice for the launching process? Particularly where you put the kids while you are launching/retrieving your boat. My kids are 6, 5 and 2. Last year, I took the two older kids with me fishing a few times, and left them in the...

    Shaft Length question..

Anyone know (or care to guess) if a trolling motor with a shaft length of 42" will be long enough to mount on the bow of a 17' open bow boat? I have read a few posts on this board from people who turned the handle from a transom mount style trolling motor around in order to mount on the bow...

Transom mnt on the bow of a 17+ foot boat?

Is anyone using a transom mount trolling motor on the bow of a 17' (or bigger) boat? I have read a few posts on this board from people who turned a transom mnt handle around to mount on the bow. My question is whether I will be able to find a transom mount trolling motor with a long enough...

Anyone use a transom mount TM on a 17+ foot boat?

I just bought a '01 Glastron 175 to use mostly for tubing with my 3 kids. I will also use it for bass fishing, and would like to add a trolling motor. I don't see an obvious flat spot on the bow, and am wondering if mounting something on the swim platform is an option. Everyone seems to...

    Trolling motor on a 175?

I just bought a Glastron 2001 175. It is not the fish&ski model, but, I would like to add a trolling motor to it at some point. Has anyone done this? The bow area looks like it might be flat enough to support a trolling motor. I'm roughly thinking maybe a Motor Guide wireless model with...

    Question on Glastron 175

I looked at a used 2001 Glastron 175 today at a local marine dealership. The boat is in good shape overall, but I was surprised to see a Chevy block motor in it. The outdrive is Volvo. I asked the salesman if that is the original motor, and he said that he would guess so - that Volvo uses all...

How important is buying a used boat locally?

I am/will be shopping for a 17' or so bowrider this Spring. My question is, when buying a used boat (thinking 1997 or newer), how important is it to buy locally? Would you travel 4 or more hours to buy a used boat, or do you consider that too risky? I assume that an outboard would...

    Family of 5 on a 17' boat ?

Is anyone using a 17' or so boat as a family boat? I would love to hear how it is working out, size-wise. I am commited to towing with a minivan next summer, and am planning to get the biggest boat that I can safely tow. To me, that means a 17 foot or so boat. I am looking at some of the...

Bowmount motor installed on Transom (?)

If I had a openbow boat that really had no flat spots on the bow, could a bowmount trolling motor be mounted on the swim step/platform on the transom? I'm thinking specifically about the motorguide with the wireless control - wondering if I could mount it on the stern and still control it with...

What is not included in "Dry Weight" ?

I am curious what is/isn't included in the dry weight of a boat. Obviously, anything "optional" that I bring onboard is not included. i.e. coolers, skiis, pasengers, etc. However what about basic things that are required to run the boat. I believe that oil and gas are not included(?) I...

Question for any 170 or 180 owners.

I am looking to get a small family tubing boat in the Spring, and have pretty much settled on looking for a used Glastron 175. I like the sport seating in the 175, and the idea of having storage space around the engine for tubes, life jackets, etc. I was hoping to compare storage space...
