paint stainless prop?

Time for a new prop. I bought a stainless prop and will install for next year. I leave my outboard down in salt water all season for a multitude of reasons. I have used the lower unit anti-fouling spay paint with relative success. Should I paint the new stainless prop next year? Or leave it...

    2 cycle vs. 4 cycle

I have read countless articles about 2 cycle and 4 cycle outboards. It looks like it is time I repowered my boat-it currently has a 175 Johnson 2 cycle with carbs. I have read about 4 cycle being cleaner, more efficient, quieter, heavier, more expensive. I have also looked at the new Evinrude...

    Hour meter

Do engine hour meters advance at a steady rate regardless of RPM? It seems to me the meter should advance quicker as RPM increases thus giving a more accurate measure of motor use. However, my friend has a meter that runs at a continous rate as long as the engine is running, and he insists they...

    Primer /ignnition

Engine is a 1990 175 VRO. No choke, but primer. Question is this-since primer is activated by pushing in key-is primer activated when key is not turned but is only straight up and down, or must key be turned to first stop ("on" position) for primer to work?

    Alternator output

Engine is a 1990 175 Johnson. I use very little electricity while using boat-at most fishfinder and running lights-voltmeter reads 12.5 before starting, right after starting voltmeter reads 14, maybe 13.5 if both of the above are on. After half a season (3 months) battery was still low-I took it...

    Why won't prop fit?

Motor is a 1990 Johnson 175. Ordered a stainless prop through iboats, when I installed it got "hung up" on lip of lower unit-the little shoulder on the inside edge of the prop rubbed. I returned to Michgan Wheel, they said it was out-of-round, replaced with new Apollo because they said my prop...

    choke

Motor is a 1990 Johnson 175 HP V-6. I think it has what's called Type III carbs. Anyway, I think I may have flooded it yesterday-wouldn't start, and I was leaving a slick on the water around the motor. Decided to let it sit for a few days-I return tomorow to try again. Checked out my Seloc...

    dashboard ground

I posted several weeks ago about alarm beeping in dashboard of my Hydrasport. Turns out it was a low oil alarm, and I get easy instructions on how to disconnect.
Anyway, dealer told me to also check for bad ground, since I also have a light problem and fuel gauge problem. Lights worked and...

    alarm

Last week I posted a problem with my 1990 175 Johnson and an alarm that was a single beep every 45 seconds-two minutes apart. Evidently this indicates a low oil situation, not a low oil flow problem.
Went out last night, checked oil tank, 3/4 full. Filled tank up to the very top, and I...

    no gas

Motor is a 94 3HP Evinrude with self-contained tank. Spark is good, seems like fuel starvation. Fresh fuel in tank, new plugs, started once for only a few seconds, then died. Is there a primer? A fuel vent? Or any other ideas? Choke is operational, fuel petcock open.

    warning alarms

Motor is a 1990 Johnson 175 VRO. Launched Sat. and started hearing a single "beep" from dash every 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Motor performance didn't seem affected. I went out for a shakedown ride and motor reached full RPM, idled nicely, everything worked fine, except for the "beep".
I...

    3 position switch

Boat is a 1989 20' Hydrosport. On the console is a row of switches. Far right switch is labeled "Power" and when I flip it up all gauges work. Next switch is "Lights" and next is "Bilge Pump". These two are three position switches-down, middle, up.
What does each position do? I can't get...

    grease fittings

Motor is a 1990 175 Johnson. I have found the two grease fittings on the tilt tube, I have found the one fitting under the carbs for the cables. I CAN'T find any fittings for the tube the motor turns on. I can see grease right under the base plate to the powerhead, I can see grease where this...

    Tilt piston stuck

Motor is a 1989 Johnson 175. Power tilt/trim worked OK last season. Last week I tilt motor up to trailer boat and tilt piston (larger one) worked fine, but one of the trim pistons is still in the down position-only one of them is extended. Should I try a little silicon spray first before I start...

    transducer paint

Last year I had some growth on my transducer for the depthfinder. I just took a scrub brush to the unit and it was fine. Wound up cleaning it off 2-3 times during the season.
I was at the marine supply store yesterday and I see a spray can of "transducer anti-fouling paint" for almost $20...

    kicker position

I picked up a 10 HP kicker this past winter. Mechanic said to mount it so that, in down position, cavitation plate on kicker was about 1" below bottom of transom. Any ideas on how close/far from main motor this should be? Any other suggestions?

    best oil

I have a 1990 175 Johnson with carbs. I have never used anything but name brand 2 cycle oil (OMC, Yamalube, Quicksilver).
In my autos I have used pure synthetic after reading all of the advantages, and now I am starting to see 2 cycle oils that are either fully synthetic or a blend. The...

    grease fittings

I bought a 1990 175 Johnson and the idiot previous owner painted over the grease fittings, so when I use a grease gun I just make a mess. I will replace the fittings in spring, but auto parts has both metric and SAE fittings. I assume this is refering to the hexagon lip, and that the threads are...

    paint for outboard

I bought a 1990 Johnson 175. Even tilted all the way up a little bit of the forward part of the lower unit is still in the water, so I plan on painting this in the spring with the anti-fouling paint for outboards (white). There is some rust up near the power tilt mechanism and locking brace...

    stuck throttle

I just picked up a 9.8 Merc for a kicker. The throttle on the handle seems to be stuck-I took the cover off and I see two cables. Anything I should know about before I take apart and try to free up the mechanism?
