What year and model? Serial number faded

On my 40 the very end of the rubber stopper to the end of the locknut is 17MM. I know mine is timed correctly. That measurement should get you in the ballpark. You can get away with the stopper being farther out (retarding) but absolutely no farther in (advancing). Hope this helps.

What year and model? Serial number faded

You're correct. Looks like his does not. My 88 j40 VRO does have both. Odd.

What year and model? Serial number faded

Yes that's the serial #, but there should be a model # also like J40elssc stamped on it. Both should help you find specs and parts. It looks like one of my own motors which I believe someone else mentioned it was a 1988 VRO. You will need a timing light, but unless you have a water tank and a...

What year and model? Serial number faded

On the top of the motor head above the cylinders you should see what looks like a welch plug that is staked into the block. On it will be stamped the serial #.

Tachs for 1980’s to mid 90’s Johnson Evinrudes

Tachs operate generally from the alternator output. You will need to know how many poles your motor has. Most tachs have a spot on the back where you can adjust the number of poles and or pulses. If I remember Teleflex has a pretty good chart on motors and the amount of poles.

    Crazy 60's or 70's 2 seater CO-V-CAT

I never said that you were insane, but in in my opinion if you put anything bigger then a 5HP on that thing you may want to consult a mental heath expert. LOL. Boat manufactures have been putting HP and capacity ratings for a very long time. Even on boats of your vintage. If it has none of that...

    Please help ....

Might be seized to the flex plate splines or the pilot bearing. I know you don't want to hear this, but you may have to pull the motor. That shaft should slide right out without a fight.

    Crazy 60's or 70's 2 seater CO-V-CAT

First off, a 33 is an odd duck. You may want to think about a more currant model outboard for it. The OAL of that boat doesn't look very big. How fast will it go? Well, that depends on motor size and weight. I would guess with a 15 it may go faster than you would feel comfortable. With a 30...

    New decals

I want to put some new decals on my 40HP Johnson outboard. Part of the old ones are missing. Do I have to peal all the old ones off, or can I just stick them over the old ones? If not, what's the best way to get the old ones off? Thanks.

    How can this be?

So I picked up this 1972 Yachtwin. I have no idea how long it's been sitting. I put fuel to it and it started up. Seemed to run OK. Now before I want to go any farther, I took the flywheel off and checked the points and any damage to the mags. They are in great shape except the bottom cyl. mag...

1972 Evinrude 4hp yacht twin conversion to short shaft

Hello. I just acquired this motor because it was cheap (20 bucks). I really don't have a use for it as it's configured for a high transom. It has a 15" extension lower leg. Never seen anything this tall. It runs great. So good in fact I want to keep it. And I will keep it if I can covert it to a...

Through hull transducers on a vintage boat

My best guess is they look something like this. The ones I've dealt with are made of stainless, these look like plastic. That's gonna leave a hole if I cut the floor to remove them and patch the hull. If I did manage to get them out, I may just have to reseal and reinstall.

Through hull transducers on a vintage boat

Hello, it's been quite a while. I recently acquired a 1972 Glastron 149 BeauJack. I noticed that it has two transducers mounted to the hull near the keel after I took the boat off the trailer. There are no wires coming out anywhere in the floor. I have already repainted the deck and relocated...

    Calling all rectifier gurus

I know my rectifier is toast following the tests in my factory service manual. I'm cheap, and don't really want to pay 50 bucks for a new one. Is there any way I can buy a cheap rectifier at a supply house and make it work? I have done a search here and found many options for a three wire but...

    thread locker question

Hi all. I'm just wraping up a carb rebuild on a Johnson 55. I want to make sure that the six screws that hold the air silencer on never, ever, come loose. That would not imo be a good thing. I've had good luck with Loctite blue on automotive applications. Also with red, but on larger bolts (...

    Getting a boat off trailer

Hi. I know this must sound like a stupid question, but I need to get my newly aquired 13' boat off the trailer for repair and paint in my garage. My first thought was to lower the hitch to the ground and somehow block up the stern and then raise the hitch letting the stern down on the blocks...

    1950's Nylox steering cables

Hi guys. I need some help. I recently aquired a 50's era Nylox fiberglass boat. The p.o. gutted all the steering cables. I know I should look for a single cable steering, but i just don't have the dough for it right now. So here's what I got. I have a steering wheel with with a drum with a...

I Just got it running with muffs at a high idle and not too high of water pressure. So here's my questions. 1) Fuel mix. I'm pretty sure it's 50:1, just want to make sure. 2) Will this motor run without being hooked to the battery? I know it won't start.Dah. Thought about disconnecting the...
