    1964 Johnson JW-19M Restoration project

LOOSE CONNECTING ROD Cracked open the power head and discovered a couple of things. First, two of the bolts showed signs of failed attempts to remove. The other six bolts were untouched. So I figure someone felt the need to open the power head and found it too difficult to remove the bolts...

    1964 Johnson JW-19M Restoration project

I am finally back to working on my Johnson (so to speak). The lower unit and powerhead are still waiting to be taken apart and cleaned. I am missing the spring for the tilt bracket. I just ordered one off ebay. Half the small fitting for the grease nipple is broken off. I have two options...

    Firestone 2hp 10A130 restoration project

The little Firestone is all put back together now. The parts got 3-4 coats of 2-part epoxy clear coat. Redid the gasket seals between the engine block and mid section. I also added an inline fuel spigot. The old brass one is good, but still lets a bit of gas seep through. It runs so well...

I agree. In this case, I have ordered all new gaskets and seals. I know that there is a heavy amount of carbon build up that needs to be removed and I want to be 100% certain the cooling chambers are free and clear. The cylinders appear perfect, no scoring. No indication of any overheating...

RPM drops on 2hp 1977 Evinrude

Most of the problem turned out to be fuel needle adjustment. As the engine warms up, it likes to run really lean, but then starts to starve. I just needed to back off the needle half a turn and it seemed to run fine.

Yes. I ordered a complete set of replacement parts. Coils, Points, Condensers, wires.

Oh, and this was what I found under the flywheel. One of these coils actually worked!

    1964 Johnson JW-19M Restoration project

The tear down is moving along. I just finished work on the carb. When I started, the choke would not budge. I was worried the rod was bent. All the components were intact, just really dirty. In case you are wondering, yes, the rest of the engine is just as dirty.

RPM drops on 2hp 1977 Evinrude

Filter screen is clean as a whistle. Coil is intact. I do a test run tomorrow morning. I did a test in the tank a few days ago. I suspect the only thing wrong was the loose nut on the handle.

RPM drops on 2hp 1977 Evinrude

Some things are done such as a full cleaning of the carb and proper gaskets (the fat at the bottom of the post) are in place. Fuel is brand new, high octane, no ethanol, with proper oil mixture. I will try removing the cap to see if it is my vent hole closing up, but I doubt it. I will try...

RPM drops on 2hp 1977 Evinrude

The carb was just fully serviced and the water impeller replaced. Gas tank was cleaned and fuel line replaced. Filter was rinsed with solvent. It starts fine and after a bit of warm-up, I adjust the high-speed needle and the engine is running fine at top speed. Then, after only a few minutes...

    1964 Johnson JW-19M Restoration project

I did pay $250 CND for this engine, but I really wanted it for two reasons. 1. it had only one owner and has remained untouched for 30 years since his death. 2. I have a cedar strip wherry and I need an engine with an integrated tank. there is no room for a separate tank. Plus, I really...

    1964 Johnson JW-19M Restoration project

I just barely finished restoring a 1960 westbend (Firestone/Elgin) and I decide to take everything I learned from that project and buy another forgotten gem for a total tear down and rebuild. This engine has sat for 30 years in someone's basement. Why didn't someone stop me?

    Firestone 2hp 10A130 restoration project

LESSONS LEARNED FROM SHAKEDOW I have had a chance to use the Firestone 2hp (Westbend/Elgin) out on the water and I have learned a few lessons. 1) Gas melts paint. That is, solvent based spray paints will not stand up to fuel spills, carburetor leaks, and leaking gaskets. The solution is...

    Firestone 2hp 10A130 restoration project

I AM DONE!!!! I tuned the fuel mixture to keep the RPM to around 3700, a bit under the 4000 the engine is rated for. Now I need to finish restoring the boat I want to use it on. If you have any questions or comments, you best leave a comment on the youtube channel. See you out on the water...

    Firestone 2hp 10A130 restoration project

Ready for testing. Its done. Nothing left to do but add fuel and try it out. But, before I do, I ordered a tachometer so I could tune in the correct RPM. It will be here in a week.

    Firestone 2hp 10A130 restoration project

Almost ready for testing. Checked the compression cold. I got it up form 50psi to 65. Not great, but I hope once the engine is warmed up, the rings will expand and bring it up more. I am waiting for new fuel lines. I opted to install an inline filter as well. In the photos, you also see a...

    Firestone 2hp 10A130 restoration project

This is the third time I have stripped this propeller. Perhaps it is the universe's way of telling me I really should fill in some of those scratches. I attached the engine to the midsection, but did not film it. Its kind of straight forward. By the way, I had to remove the flywheel again...
