1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Been a while since I last posted here but I've been using the boat and it's still running well. Planned on using it on the sea or lakes but the weather hasn't been great so, so far, I've still only used it on a local river. Still had the same problem with the engine not staying hot enough...

    Need help

Years ago I did some work for a UK firm called Powergen, I did similar for them (helped set up a new QC and trace-ability system etc), mostly coal and gas fired stations but nukes too. Also done some NDT myself, mostly magnetic/die-pen and ultrasonic but some Xray bombing.

    4hp johnson slower than expected

As a kid I had an 8ft inflatable (with wooden transom) and 3.5 Suzuki, dad made up a stiff wooden floor for it, it would plane with us both in it.

Confused? Voltage Regulator vs Rectifier; Tach & Charging

Don't be in such a rush to leave Popeye, when I first joined I started a couple of threads about my (same) boat, moderators gave me a bit of a scolding and merged my threads, but the same moderators (also users of the forum) went on to help answer some of my questions. Nothing yoy wrote was...

    95 502 needs help

It'll indicate actual pressure regardless of where it's fitted in the feed to injectors. Pressure will be limited by the reg or pump, most likely the reg. If the pump can only pump to 30psi you won't get higher than 30psi, if the reg is set to 30psi you won't get higher than 30psi.

My dad had a Winner Viscount in the early 80's, I thought they were made in Wales?

    O2 Sensor codes . . .

Those 2 error code descriptions combined often point to the probe's heater circuit being shorted to its signal output, a problem with the probe itself or its wiring, in which case changing the probe (or fixing the wiring issue) is the fix. Good idea to swap probe positions to see if the error...

    Math problem

Been said you'd need 15.36oz in a 6 gallon tank, 2.56oz in a 1 gallon tank. So if you already had a gallon of pre-mixed in the tank it will have contained 2.56oz oil. You added 16oz of oil, so now your 1 gallon contains close to 18.6oz. If you add an extra 5 gallons of fuel you'll have 18.6oz...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Yes I'd bet most people on the planet know about Holley carbs lol, I don't know much about specific features though. I was meaning to take another look at the Holley website if/when I got around to rebuilding this carb, I'll look sooner now, thanks.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Thanks @Horigan, I appreciate you trying to help but as @Lou C says my fuelling setup is the Holley 2bbl. I haven't had the carb apart and I left it in the boat all winter when I had the engine removed. After rebuilding the engine all I did to clean the carb was put some fuel in it and...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Thanks Lou, Yes it is the Prestolite with electronic 'points' (not mechanical points). I haven't lubricated the weights yet, how is that done? It didn't seem like a misfire, seemed more like the mixture gradually got leaner. But when back on the jetty near the slipway I changed the dizzy cap...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Used the boat on the river for another couple of days and a total of around 70 miles again, this time we went further up the river where there are fewer boats and fishermen to moan about breaking the speed limit. Maintained 30mph at around 3000rpm for 20 minutes no problem but when I opened her...

    Process for changing boat trailers?

Thanks, I have copied and pasted your answer to my friend. Come to think of it I've read similar before. My friend and I didn't know if this would cause a lot of strain on the transom or other parts of the boat. Didn't want to punch a hole through the hull!

    Process for changing boat trailers?

Slightly off topic but probably not worth starting a new thread about... My friend has a Bayliner bowrider with 4.3 Mercruiser, he wants to lower the rollers on the trailer to make the boat sit lower on the trailer to make it easier to launch. It can all be modified using his existing rollers...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Thanks, I think I understand how the system works but wasn't sure if the water flowed up or down through the wide diameter pipe to the circulation pump. I was thinking was there will always be a lot of water recirculating even when the stat is closed. During time the stat is closed any rust...

Not sure if the boat has been used in salt water, I know the last owner used it only on fresh water and some people have said the drive etc seem in too good condition for it to have been left for long in salt water. So far I've only used it on fresh water but I do plan on using it on salt water...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I'd forgotten about the pas cooler when I wrote my ideas for winterising, think I would've remembered when the time comes. See what you mean about not needing to remove the stat housing. Does salt away shift rust scale too? Or what product will shift rust scale? The reason why I want to get rid...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I bought oxalic acid powder to mix with water, obviously to some extent strength depends on weight of powder versus quantity of water. But, like you say, even if I made it as strong as possible it still wouldn't be a very strong acid, after a certain concentration the powder just stops...
