Need to remove tilt cylinder axle, V4

I need to remove the pin pictured below. Any suggestions? I've soaked with WD-40, heated with propane torch, and tapped with a block of wood/hand sledge. It budges maybe 1/16". Is there a better way? Should I pull the entire mount off the motor and pull the steering tube out so I can spin it to...

    Latest project updates

As some may remember, I have been completely restoring my old Glastron T-166. If not, the last thread is here: http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=26;t=000495#000026

The project was put on hold the past few weeks while I had surgery to repair a disc in...

    Rochester 2bbl carb rebuild

My Mercruiser 888 still has the original 2bbl Rochester carb. It needs rebuilding as it didn't get done when the engine was rebuilt last season. I have never tried to overhaul a carb, but will tackle just about anything. How hard is it to rebuild this thing? I have a Clymer and it doesn't...

    Restoration Pics

I thought I would finally get my project pics together and get them up on the net. Unfortunately, she still isn't finished yet, but some paint, sanding, polishing, and reassembly should fix that. Pics can be viewed in my gallery here: Gallery There are 3 pages, just use the nav buttons at...

    Drain plug in new transom

Are there any reasonable alternatives to the standard drain tube in my new transom? The transom is 1.5" thick with about 1/8" fiberglass sheath on the outside. I keep looking and there has to be a better way.

    Wet sanding trick

Found an interesting aid for sanding/wet sanding. Apologies if someone has found this one before. Necessity is the mother of invention.

While wet sanding my hull and looking for something better than a regular sanding block (cramps my hands and can't handle odd areas, I stumbled...

    Electrical Question

I just installed a new Pertronix kit and Pertronix coil in my Mercruiser 888. It is currently drawing its power from the resistance wire, which isn't the optimal solution. As I read the diagram, the key-on wire goes to the electric choke then to the ignition coil via the "resistance" wire. As...

    Straight weight/multi-vis oil

Possible dumb question, but why is straight weight oil recommended for marine engines (at least older ones). I have a fresh rebuilt '76 Mercruiser 302 V8 (about 20 hours so far) that I have run the recommended st. 30 weight in since she was put in. Would a good 10w30 work as well? I have high...

    Timing problems, 302 Ford

I Have my Merc 888 w/302 Ford. We rebuilt it last year and changed it to 302 firing order. I started it up a week or two ago and it ran perfectly. I then pulled the points and installed a Pertronoix Ignitor II and coil. It appeared to really throw the timing out. I played with the timing...

    Glass on Stringers

How much is enough? In rebuilding my 15' tri-hull w/ 85hp V4, I have come upon an interesting question. How thich shoiuld I make the glass on teh stringers? I currently have 2 layers of heavily resined 1.5oz mat. Is this sufficient? It seems very solid, but I don't want to ever do this job...

    Need some support here...

I started glassing wood back in my Glastron today. I started with a fairly easy bulkhead to work on my technique. Wow. I have new respect for fiberglass folks. What a messy job. I got it partly done, but my resin was a bit too hot and started to gel, so I stopped to see how this looks in...

    Poly Resin

How forgiving is poly resin? I just mixed my first batch to coat my new stringers with (no cloth, just coating them before I put them in the hull for some extra waterproofing. I mixed the resin a bit "cold" so I would have plenty time to work with it. Unfortunately, I think I under-did the...

    Removing Silicone sealant

Anyone have any tricks to removing the clear household type silicone sealer? Some was used to seal some items on my boat in the past and I need to remove it so I can sand/paint. Will anything dissolve it? It's not very thick, but it won't peal off.

    Replacing stringers

I removed the deck of my 16' Glastron Tri-Hull to do a transom and found that I need more than a transom. All 3 stringers are mush along with some sub-flooring so I naw have the floor completely torn out. The existing stringers are 1"x4" and 1"x8". I am planning to replace the wood with strip...
