Since I bought my 40 HP 1972 Evinrude.........

I have been asking questions on here in an attempt to get it running. You folks have been a great help especially putting up with my incorrect terminology. AN UPDATE: Today, I got it started!!! I was so thrilled. I only ran it for about 10-15 seconds but it DID run. I didn't get a chance to...

    Mounting an outboard engine question

When installing my 1972 40 HP Evinrude, are there specifications as to how deep the motor should be in the water? Or, how deep (or shallow) does the prop goes below the bottom of the boat? I know there are issues with "drag" or something called cavitation etc. How would you mount your 40 HP...

While squeezing the ball on the fuel line fuel comes out the hole next to the low speed adjustment. I have attached a picture so you can see what hole I'm referring to. Can anyone tell me why this is doing this? Thank you

    Wiring harness question

1972 40 HP Evinrude 40202E I need the engine wiring harness 385126 and harness from motor to dash 383328 and can't seem to locate one. I have checked with some salvage yards and if they have one, the price they are asking in my opinion is crazy high! So, my question is has anyone built their...

    My 1972 40HP Evinrude won't start....UPDATE...and help needed

Re: My 1972 40HP Evinrude won't start....UPDATE...and help needed I went out and took a picture of it. The coils look new to me. I see no cracks or discoloration. I found this white wire that comes from the coil area and just ends. I put a white paper towel behind it so you can see it...

1972 Evinrude 40 HP won't start. Yes, I read the top secret post....help!

Model # 40202E. Previous owner says it has been sitting "awhile" ( you know the old story) I made sure there was spark to both cylinders, blue and strong. The starter engages and turns the motor. I set the choke and crank it with no pops, no sputters, nothing. I release the choke and a short...

    Is my motor missing something?

This is a 1972 40202E 40 HP. I purchased. There seems to be some wiring missing. I think someone "borrowed" a harness?!?! Also, the third picture shows the wiring harness that comes from the dash. I find no place on this motor to plug this in ( hence why I think something is missing). I also...

1972 Evinrude 40 HP Charging system question..

I have the motor listed in the title model # 40202E. Says Norseman on the back of the cover. I recently aquired this motor and upon close inspection I see what looks like a missing generator/alternator. Reason I ask is that during a trip to the auto parts store to get some gear lube, I ran into...

1972 Evinrude 40 HP I just purchased. I need help please...

I purchased a 1972 40 HP Model 40202E from a guy that says the motor ran last year. Upon getting the motor home, I cleaned the mouse nests out of it as it seems it has been sitting behind his garage for awhile. I put a battery on it just briefly to check/confirm the following: The starter works...
