Let's do the next owner a favor please

Just got off the phone with a mechanic who will actually work on my 1969 Merc outboard. I had purchased a seal kit and a water pump base and housing for it a month or so ago and he began to put thos ethings in. He realizes that most of the seals don't match and that the base is not the correct...

What's the difference in these water pump bases???

I picked up a brand new water pump base at the Merc dealer the other day. Brought it home and compared it to the old one that I had removed from the LU. They look similiar with one exception. If your looking down at the base as it's installed on the driveshaft, on the left side of the base near...

    Correct water pump base???

Was changing out the water pump housing and gaskets lastnight. After removing the lower base, I noticed that the gasket had a gap in it and that the lower base was cracked. I noticed a housing on ebay for sale for a 80-150 Merc outboard. Picked it up for cheap. My question is will my motor, a...

Who has the best outboard? This might answer it.

I'm new to the boating world and have learned alot form this site. I have an old Mercury 800 and I love it. It seems that the things we had first, we like the best and that's how I feel about Mercury in general. Now, I was doing some research on an ultalight helicopter that I want to buy and...

Of course I'll have the survey done but was just wondering if there is anything specific for this model. Thanks for any help you can...

Prop shaft seal...Can I do this???

I'm looking to replace the seal on the prop shaft of my 1969 Merc 800 engine. Is this a job that can be done by someone with some mechanical ability? Or is it wiser to take it in to the stealer and have the shop do it. I'm selling the boat come spring but I don't want to leave someone with the...

Looking for a little help from you guys....

OK pros, I'm looking for some help. A few weeks ago, I wrote a post concerning a 2001 Merc 75hp that was listed for 900 dollars. I'm in the middle of this deal right now and the seller has agreed to use an escrow service. The engine is listed on boattraderonline.com. I'm asking a few of you...

Should I sell now or wait????

I new to the ways of the boat market, especially here in wonderful, sun-drenched Ohio. I'm getting ready to put up my boat for the winter. I can store it in my garage so being able to show it to prospective buyers wouldn't be a problem. I'm looking at moving up to a larger boat in the spring and...

Suggestions on a 19-22' cuddy cabin

Well, I'm already looking forward to next summer and possibly a new(used) boat. I'm looking to spend around 10K. I'd like to have a 19-22' cuddy cabin. I've looked aprices here in Ohio and I see that I can get a nice SR, Baja, Chapparel, for around, maybe a little more than a Bayliner. Does...

cost of replacing lower unit seals?

I received a quote from a local guy who does work on older engines. Does 300 dollars sound out of the park to install all the the seals that come with Mercury's lower unit seal kit. This is for a 1969 Mercury 800 engine. This price includes the seal kit. I just don't know if I'm up to doing this...

    2001 Mercury 75hp for $900

I'm looking at a 75hp Mer. 2001 model. The owner says it has 120 hours on it and has not had any repairs to it and that it is in perfect condition. The motor appears to be extremely clean from photos. I would need to travel to NY to look at it. Does this seem like it's too good of a deal...

Advice on second time out with boat!!

After reviewing many posts, I applied this boards advice to my 1976 16'Silverline w/ 1969 Merc 800 motor and now my boat runs GREAT. I used the Mercury Engine Tune on the engine, replaced the fuel line from the tank, filter and coupler on the engine and took it out a second time and it never...

Dumb question but I need to know the answer

OK, I work on auto and marine engines with pretty much no problems but for the life of me, I cannot seem to remember or figure out how a two-stroke engine lubricates itself. I know oil goes in with the gas into the combustion chamber, but how does everything else get lubricated???? It may be so...

Does my engine have the correct spark plugs

My 1969 Mercury 800 80hp has Champion L77JC4 spark plugs installed by the previous owner. The manual states the L76V. Is this going to harm my engine. I ran it once this year and it ran fine except for some high end running. Is there a great difference in these two plugs? Thanks for any input.
